Backup from Win7 to XP Partition fails to validate unless copied back to Win7 disk ???
Hi All,
I have Win7 on my primary disk and XP on a separate HD. I boot into either at present from BIOS boot menu without any problems. The Win7 disk was installed without the XP disk connected.
If I backup the Win7 System Reserved and C: Drive partitions to the XP disk then validation fails, however, if I then copy the "failed" backup from the XP disk to a second partiton on the Win7 disk the copy validates!
Anyone know what the problem is (I've done this more than once and the same thing happens.
Many thanks!
TI Build 6514

Daddave,
What happens if you try to mount or explore the tib file?
Are you validating from TI installed on the W7 disk or is TI also on the XP disk as well.
My immediate thought was this is a permissions issue, but I'm not sure in your case why this should be. Are you able to access the XP disk normally through Windows 7, how does the disk appear in the W7 file manager?

Hi Colin,
Thanks for your reply, good suggestion!
Strangely I can mount (and then edit) the tib file. The drives appear in Win7 file manager as O: (system reserved) and P: (original C: file).

Sorry, forgot to add - failed validation was from the Win7 OS (not tried yet from XP disk - and yes that does have a copy of TI).

Have now tried to mount from XP, and I get the same error message as originally
Furthermore, when rebooting to Win7 I newly get an "Image is already mounted" message (attached). But can't see the mounted drives any more!
PS have collected an extra two versions of the .tib file en route during all the above testing. (v2.tib and v3.tib)

Should perhaps add that the original backup attempt was to a data partition on the XP disk. That partition appears as a normal drive in Win7.

Hi James,
Thanks for your reply - strangely I got this by email even though your above post seems blank now?
For the benefit of any others, the solution as implied by you, was to check security permissions on the relevant XP partition backup folder, and even though I personally had full control, it seems I needed to give the SYSTEM full control (it did not seem to have any) for the validation to work!
Presumably this means the validation relies on SYSTEM permissions........?
Seemingly the permissions on the "XP Home OEM" disk partition directory (at least as viewed from Win7) were more restrictive than on the Win7 Home Premium disk data partition directory (this had EVERYONE full............hmmm, perhaps I need to learn more about/concentrate on security issues.....)

I had a problem with my internet connection and thought I had double posted. I edited my post, only to find out it was the only one. OOPS.
Glad it helped.

Yes, many thanks - it probably saved me being up again half the night trying to figure out what the **** was going on (and/or what I had done)!

I should also have said thanks again to Colin - clearly he had already identified the potential problem area (if I had had the nous to investigate a bit further at that point)!
PS I originally typed "nouse" (not knowing how to spell properly) - see http://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/nouse
----maybe this would also have been handy ;)
