Backup Windows 7 XP Mode data

Thread needs solution

I'm running Windows 7 Premium-64 bit with XP Mode installed. Using Acronis True Image Home 2010, how do I back up data files created in XP Mode?

Thanks!

Jim:

Your backups of the Windows 7 partition will contain a copy of the XP virtual disk. So if you restore a copy of the virtual disk (.vhd) file you will restore the entire XP virtual machine - lock, stock and barrel. You can also just use Windows Explorer to make a copy of the virtual disk file and save it on an external USB disk.

If you want to use True Image to back up from within XP mode you would need to install True Image to your XP Virtual Machine. After that it works just the same as it does when running Windows 7. But if you're only wanting to back up data files created in XP mode you can just use Windows Explorer to save them to an external disk, or you can automate the file backup process by using Microsoft SyncToy or Karen's replicator.

Thanks, Mark. However...

I do have a file called "Windows XP Mode base.vhd" in my Program Files/Windows XP Mode folder (the only .vhd file on my system). It is 1.1 GB in size, but is dated 9/12/09. I've created a lot of data in XP mode apps during the last couple of months that I've owned this system. Shouldn't the .vhd file be dated as of the most recent such creation/update of data if it contains that data?

Jim:

You're probably using differencing disks then. With differencing disks the base XP installation is in the file Windows XP Mode base.vhd and never changes. Anything written to disk later goes into another file that contains only changes to your base XP mode installation. Look for files dated recently with the extension .vcmx to find your recent data.

Here are two references that explain differencing disks in Windows Virtual PC:

Hope this helps...
