Backup wont complete

When a backup starts it gets to 50% and then seems to hang there for a very very long time. Sometimes taking up to 2 days to complete. What I started noticing is that it will start with one file and name it
System_M_3_2_2010 where M is the drive and obviously the date. Then when I see it is sitting at 50% and look at the file it has
System_M_3_2_2010_B5809204-9F5F-4D29-9AC9-349470DA30881 Any clue why these are just taking forever to back up and why this file?

Most likely it encountered bad clusters on the destination drive. Run Chkdsk /r on it and see if that helps. If it doesn't, run chkdsk /r on the source drive as well.
