Backups are suddenly smaller!

I have been making manual full backups on a weekly basis for quite some time. Suddenly today I notice that the backup file is smaller than ever before. It was generally about 28 Gb and now it is only about 20 Gb. I am confused. Does anyone have an idea about this?

I should mention that I have two hard drives and only backup my C: drive.

The only sure way to tell is to mount them and check the sizes of directories ( manually in explorer or using du ocmmand)
