Backups are very confusing

Thread needs solution

I used to have True Image 11 and life was simple. I upgraded to 2011 and now doing a simple thing such as a full / differential backup is way to confusing.

I created a Custom scheme with the Differential backup method. I set it to create a full version after every 5 differential versions. I enabled old version cleanup to "Delete version chains older than 3 days".

So I expect one full backup and 3 differential backups on my disk at all time. So I got:

Backup.tib
Backup1.tib
Backup2.tib
etc.

So far so good! Then it got around and doing the next full backup. Now I get

Backup(1).tib
Backup(1)2.tib
Backup(1)3.tib.

However, the original full Backup.tib is never deleted? Why does the program add the (1) to a file? Why not just overwrite the original file (like True Image 11 did)? How do I set it up to create a full backup every 5 days, some differential backups in between, and just delete the old backups? I don't need old backups!!!

Thanks,
Pat

Hi Pat,

ATI will first create a new full backup (it uses integers between brackets at the end of the name for fulls) and then add another integer suffix to indicate the partial backup.

In addition, ATI will first create a new full backup, then delete any old backup chain according to cleanup rules.

Use the attached settings. Used with daily backups, they create a full every week, and keep only one month of backups (keeps 4 recent version chains).

Thanks for the info. I will update; probably only keep 2 weeks worth of version chain. Not sure why more is really necessary.

PatG25,

YOu can choose how far back you want to go. Personally, I keep as many backups as I can while keeping free space on the backup disk so that I can store 1.5 to 2 times a complete chain (this might be needed in periods where I experiement a lot with the OS).
