Bad Install

Thread needs solution

I downloaded and installed Acronis True Image Home 2012 to update version 2011. Of course, the download is the complete program, but probably because I was updating I installed over version 2011 - bad mistake! My computer kept locking up and when I activated the Acronis Startup Recovery Manager it somehow damaged my Master Boot Record and I could not reboot. It took me one whole afternoon and evening to sort out the mess.

I did try uninstalling version 2011 but I think the damage had already been done, In the end I had to restore an earlier backup using my Acronis
Recovery Boot Disk. This restored version 2011 and now my computer is
working properly again. I should probably try re-installing version 2012
again but I will wait and see if anyone else has any problems with it.
It has cost me too much time this weekend!

I have had the same issue as yours. Although I am not sure my solution is the panacea here, I had complete upgrade success leaving 2011, turning off my security suite (Norton 360) and upgrading in place. Everything came into place nicely and I am now using 2012 for my main home machine (instead of playing with it on VMs).
First time I installed 2012, I left my security suite on. It was a a complete disaster. I restored an image with 2011 installed, uninstalled it, use the cleanup utility, installed 2012: disaster again. Restored again, turned off the security suite, installed 2012: wow! perfect!
Go figure...

Hi Pat,

Yes, Acronis TI Home 2012 seems sensitive to the computer environment that it is being installed into.
In my case, I think that de-activating the Acronis Startup Recovery Manager before uninstalling Acronis TI Home 2011 was the key because I didn't do that the first time and my MBR was corrupted.
I'm glad you got yours sorted.

The easiest thing, believe it or not is follow these rules of thumb:

disable all non-microsoft services and all startup programs )use msconfig.exe for this :
http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/ .
unistall the prior version.
install new version. If using Vista or W7, then to install, right click onthe installer file and choose Run as Adminsitrator.
enable services and startup programs.

If you aren't going to usnitall the older version at least follow the other steps. This gives you the best chance for a complete and success install.

Thanks - I'll make a note of your procedures.

However, I do think that it is best to uninstall the previous version first.
