Basic set up questions for Acronis 2010
Hello,
I have several questions regarding the use of ATI.
I have Acronis 2010 on my home computer. Recently I had an operating system
crash, which was beyond my capabilities in restoring. I had a technician
perform this.
I would like to get a better understanding of what I need to do in order to manage
ATI properly in case this happens again, so I can save myself the problems and money.
1) The technician set up a secure Zone on my main drive. Since I am going to an external
drive, do I really need this.
a) If I delete it, can I still restore a failure using the Acronis Bootable Rescue media? If I do need it, can I place
it on the external drive?
B) I like using the Try and decide feature on software changes, does deleting the secure zone affect this?
2) On the external drive, should I use the Add new disk feature? It will be used strictly for back up.
3) This is on my personal computer, which has family info plus Photoshop graphics that I work on.
Would a full back up with incremental backups probably be best? With the incremental intervals
a week apart? I don’t want to fill up my drive unnecessarily (1.5 TB )
4) I should be able to move TIB files from my secondary internal drive to the external?
Sorry for basic questions. However after reading through the forums, I was still a bit confused on some
issues.
Thanks

In addition:
1. The secure zone is an optional feature. Most do not use it.
1a. If you do delete the Secure Zone (SZ), open True Image and do the deletion from inside the program. The program will then give you an opportunity to assign the space from the Secure zone back into your drive C.
2, Drive should be already formatted and secure zone not needed. Check the file system for the external drive. The NTFS is the preferred file system so it can handle large TIB backup files.
3. Hopefully, you also have some backup copies of your pictures on DVD, etc in addition to internal and external drive copies. Your family pictures are too important not to have extra copies. Plus, never ever edit the original copy--always edit a copy.
4. After moving, it is best to validate the moved files when booted from the TI Rescue CD.
5. The type backup which provides the most options for restore is the disk option backup.

Thanks to both of you for your direct and informative answers.
One last question for DwnNDrty.
"1b. No, it doesn't ... but there are easier and safer ways than using T & D."
care to elaborate? I'm always interested in better processes.

Cflan,
Hello,I use T&D all the time, and it is an excellent way to preview software. Just one caveat .. when your finished "doing your thing" with T&D .. Do not click save changes. This will create a file (sometimes large) on your C: drive (TnD Loader blah blah) If you delete it, things will go south in a hurry. Better ... "Discard changes" Then if you want whatever you did ...Then do it for real ( no T&D) End result ... a leaner C: drive and the change that you have tried. I know this goes against "Common Wisdom" ...but i use this function daily.. and this works. (and common wisdom is usually wrong) regards Fred

Save the Registry before you try the software.
Install the software ... if unsuitable .... then ..
Uninstall software using Revo Uninstaller (free).
Restore Registry saved in the first step.
