Best practices for Universal Restore and new laptop

Thread needs solution

Assuming I have the correct driver sets, is it still better to try to Universal Restore to a similar make/model laptop (ie from an older HP Pavilion to a new model) or is it "relatively" manufacturer/model neutral

I damaged my lap top (beyond reasonable repair), performed an appropriate back up and now need to get a new computer

If you use universal restore to move the current backup to the new computer you will end up with the old OS on your new computer. If your old computer is XP then the new one will be XP. You may not want this to happen. A files and folders backup is what you want. You will have to re-install your apps on the new machine. If the OS is the same on both machines then UR will work. See http://forum.acronis.com/forum/3426 section 7-B H for some explanations.

OS will be the same..Win 7 Prof 64 bit..I have way too many apps and I'm trying to avoid this if it al possible

The machine I am thinking about getting is very similar...

Although the laptops might be similar, they may use different chipsets and that would be enough for you to need Universal Restore.
