Best way to backup large mailbox files (thunderbird or MS Outlook/ Outlook express)
Dear All,
I would like to use Acronis True Image Home for backing up my mailbox, preferably each day, using an incremental or differential backup method.
I am using Thunderbird as my general mail client, I have tons of mails, so my mailbox size is around 1GB already.
I tried to make a full backup of the mail folder using Acronis, then I received some few new emails (size of them can be counted in kbytes), and then I made an incremental backup. The thing is that most probably the way Acronis works is only check whether a file has changed or not, and if yes, the entire 1GB file is backed up as a whole! This certainly makes no sense and it ain't "incremental" in the meaning I would imagine. The same happens for differential. In such case it is simply easier to just perform a full backup each day, but that is a pain in the ... if you work with 1 or 2Gigs mailbox files.
Is there any way to perform a true incremental backup of mailbox, so that the incremental backup is of similar size as the total size of new emails that were sent/received since the previous backup? I think there should be some internal check inside the mailbox file so that only new mails are grabbed for new incremental backup. So the action should be performed on a message level, not file level. What are suggestions, best practices for such cases? Having 1GB backup each day is quite uncomfortable. I know I can make backups every week or so, but what if some disk failure occurs right in the middle of the backup period....argh.
