Black Screen Reboots

Thread needs solution

I've had excellent results from True Image Echo Workstation, but a problem drive on my wife's Thinkpad under XP Pro has me stumped.

When I attempt to clone the drive, and Acronis reboots, it shows a brief Windows XP Pro splash screen as usual but then the screen goes to black. Usually it shows the Acronis progress window so you know when cloning is complete. Nevertheless, the cloning process DID work, with both the computer and the backup drive showing drive activity. When this activity stopped, the cloning had apparently completed.

I noticed a similar "black screen" issue when I tried chkdsk on this drive. It reboots and then boots up again to a black screen with continual disk activity. Checkdisk was apparently running but the display showed nothing.

So I don't suspect that this may be strictly an Acronis issue. However, unless I use chkdsk or Acronis, the drive boots up fine, although it does sit at an initial black screen for a good 20 seconds before the XP Splash screen occurs. Drive Fitness Test shows the drive has no problems. There are also no driver conflicts, nothing showing in device manager, no spyware/virus issues. The graphics display driver has also been updated. So I don't know what else to check.

The issue seems to only occur on these processes that require exclusive drive access (Acronis or chkdsk). Otherwise, there is no issue. Any ideas on what else to check on what could be causing these types of reboots to a black screen?

Hello,

Please accept our apologies for the difficulties you've experienced.

Let me shed some light on the issue.

Acronis uses its own environment during the cloning process, so most likely, it just don't have necessary video drivers or detects your video adapter incorrectly.

To avoid such issues in the future I may suggest you to use a standalone Acronis bootable CD to clone the drives. In that case you don't need to reboot to complete the clone process. You can find more information on how to create Acronis bootable media at the Chapter 10 of the User's Guide.

Additionally, I may recommend you to have a look at this KB article to have some information on how to clone laptop hard drives.

Please reply to this thread if you have any additional questions.

Thank you.
