Due to problems with my normal backup method, SMB, I'm trying to run a backup from the boot CD to an ftp server.

I insert the server name as the path and add a username and password. This authenticates fine then the interface locks up. I cannot do anything, I have to power down the machine from the power button.

It looks like the issue is with the Acronis Bootable Rescue Media you are using, let's test it. Right now I'm going to forward you the new Acronis Bootable Rescue Media in ISO format via PM, please kindly follow the instructions mentioned in PM to see whether it resolves the issue.
