"Boot a computer into the media"?

Thread needs solution

I've backed up the contents of my laptop HD. Now I want to create a recovery CD in case something goes wrong with the laptop O.S. (Windows 7). The only option to do so I can find talks about "booting a computer into the media". What on earth does that mean? Is this the recovery CD creation option?

Normally one would create and check your bootable media before doing a backup, to make sure the bootable media works fine with your hardware.

You can build the bootable media using the Acronis Bootable Media Builder that should have been installed with True Image. It is actually a separate application which can be started independently of True Image (Start->All Programs->Acronis->True Image Home->Bootable Rescue Media Builder). It is best to save the ISO file and burn this to a CD with a program capable of handling image files properly.

Or you can download an ISO image file from your Acronis account, and burn that to a CD. It is good to have at least these two versions on hand.

There are also options for making BartPE or WinPE builds.

 Hello,

Gary thank you for the help, you're absolutely correct.

Robert, let me add a few instructions on how to download the bootable media from your account:

  1. Log in to your account (if you do not have one, you will need to create it);
  2. Once logged in, click My Products & Downloads (note that you should register your software first):

  3. Scroll down to the registered product and click Bootable Media:

  4. Click Download:

  5. Acronis Bootable Media will be downloaded as an ISO file. See Burning an ISO Image.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

Thank you.

Thank you for your response. I have done everything you suggest but the Winzip file contains 2 files, both BIN files, not ISO.

I'm a little confused about how you got a Winzip file. Where did this come from? You can directly download the ISO file from your account - it is not a zipped file, it is a single file with an .ISO extention. This is not any kind of backup file.

The Bootable Rescue Media Builder has an option for making an ISO image, as seen in the attached screenshot. Are you selecting the ISO image at this step?

Hello,

Robert, again let me add a little side note to Gary's instructions: if you will create a bootable media with standard Acronis Bootable Media Builder, you should access boot options another way:

  1. Boot the computer from Acronis bootable rescue CD
  2. Hit F11 key either on the selection screen which some of Acronis products provide or when Starting Acronis Loader... message appears
  3. Type in acpi=off noapic and click OK to proceed

My first instructions are applicable only to ISO image downloaded from your account.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you.

I go to My Account and navigate to:

Product native bootable media
Build: #7046 Size: 35.54 MB
Date: April 1, 2010

I select the Bootable tab. When I click Download, the file that downloads is TrueImage2010_s_uk

When I dlownload it, I see the same name.
Underneath it says: Winzip File (.iso)

When I open the zip file, I get two BIN files:

catalog.bin (Size: 2048)
image.bin (Size: 36,881,920)

In answer to your other question, no I am not selecting the ISO image for the Bootable Rescue Media Builder. Isn't it better to have a CD/DVD to boot up if the O.S. becomes corrupt?

Hello Robert,

You shouldn't open the downloaded .iso file, you should just burn it to a CD/DVD. You can use a specialized freeware ISO burning program, please see the below guide:

  1. Download ISO Recorder from the following link:
  2. Install the downloaded file;
  3. Browse to the ISO file that you need to burn. Right-click on the file and select Copy image to CD:

  4. The CD Recording Wizard will start:

Make sure there is a blank CD in the drive. Click Next.

  5. ISO Recorder will start burning the ISO image:

  6. Once the operation completes, click Finish:

Now you can boot your machine from the CD. Make sure that CD is specified as the first boot device in BIOS.

Thank you.

I select the Bootable tab. When I click Download, the file that downloads is TrueImage2010_s_uk

When I download it, I see the same name.
Underneath it says: Winzip File (.iso)

When I open the zip file, I get two BIN files: (do not open)

catalog.bin (Size: 2048)
image.bin (Size: 36,881,920)

After you have downloaded the iso file, the file name should not have changed when it is written to your hard drive as a file.

For example: open Windows Explorer and browse to where you stored the downloaded file. Right click on the TrueImage2010_s_uk.iso file and select the program to perform the burn of iso to cd such as the free ImgBurn. ImgBurn calls this option "Write image file to disc". After the iso file is burnt to CD, you should have an Acronis bootable CD.

Why you see the Winzip name is that your computer has the extension "iso" associated with the WinZip program. This iso file extension can be associated with any burn program of your choice.

Edit: My response was formulated and posted before I knew about the support response.

Thank you all, Ilya, Gary, and GroverH, for your help. I have two other questions.

1. The back up I did of my laptop had a few glitches. The first was:

Failed to read from sector 197.716.919 of HDI.
Failed to read the snapshot (0x10C45A).
CRC Error (0x100155).

I chose Retry, and it then seemed to work. But soon afterwards I got a similar message with 975 instead of 919. Now Retry did not work, and I got an identical message a few seconds later. After about 5 retries, the process continued, but at a snail's pace. Originally it had taken about 40 minutes to do 80% of the process. Now it took about 4 hours to do the rest.

The final message was that the process had completed successfully. But later I saw that a red Failure mark had been put on the date of backup.

How critical is all this? What can I do to repair whatever it is that is wrong?

2. My second question is: if I put a password on my backup external HD, how can I access the backup of my laptop when I have to use my bootable CD?

Robert-

Sounds like you disk has some problems - "Failed to read from sector..." is a very bad sign. You had best run chkdsk /f /r prior to doing any backup to see if the problems can be corrected. Your disk may be failing. I doubt this backup is any good, with the CRC Error and all. These are critical errors and problems that must be addressed, otherwise True Image can't do it's job. Others may have more specific advise. I would also do the backup from bootable media when the problems are fixed.

I have backed up a new laptop. The three drives have been backed up into a TrueCrypt password-protected container on an external HD. But suppose my problem is a corrupt OS. How can I configure the bootable media so as to open the container?

You suggest doing the backup from bootable media. Does this mean ghosting a copy of my 3 drives onto DVDs? Won't I need a lot of them? Or am I misunderstanding you?

Gary means to boot from the Acronis bootable media and make your backups while booted from it. You can still backup to an external hard drive this way. This approach eliminates the OS(WIN 7) as a variable and makes sure you can see all of your drives while using the recovery environment.
