Boot Disk Failure

Thread needs solution

I started receiving error messages that my hard-drive was failing, so I've attempted to clone my Windows 7 partition on a SATA drive to an IDE drive that I had. Unfortunately, when I attempt to boot up on my IDE drive, I receive a "boot disk failure" message and I'm unable to boot to Windows 7.

I've attempted the windows 7 recover CD, but it apparently doesn't detect an operating system, while according to acronis the clone completed successfully. The BIOS detects the IDE drive as far as I can tell. I'm really out of ideas.

Any suggestions?

Don't clone, make a diskmode backup of the entire disk or least least backup the windows and the system reserved partitions--if you don't get both, you don't get the windows boot manager (the operating system loader).

You might still have issues with the hdisk since it's not going to use the same driver (the sata driver) that will be in the backup.

Check the Older Versions forum -- there was a thread on this there yesterday.
