Boot Mgr is missing

Thread needs solution

I backed up my notebook HDD image to a network drive and tried to restore to a new SSD. Now I get Boot Mgr is missing. I do not have a Windows 7 disk because the HDD had a reserved partition with the windows files. When restoring, I have 3 items to select including the MBR and the reserved partition. Should I select them all ??

Normally, you would want to restore the System Reserved partition, the Windows partition, the MBR & Track 0, and the Disk Signature.

What did you restore?

The boot manager is in the reserved partition which must be an active system partition.

If you can't do a straight across restore of the entire disk -- for example you need to resize -- then do the reserved partiton first--but keep it the original size, then the other partions and MBR/Track 0 disk signature last.

I cloned my laptop drive and got this on the first boot. For me the fix was:
1. swapping the drives so the original drive was back inside the laptop
2. boot the old drive into Win7
3. Hook the new drive up with USB adapter
4. right click on Computer, select manage
5. Run Storage manager
6. Right click on the new drive's hidden system reserved partition and select Make Active
7. Turn off laptop
8. Remove old drive and place new drive in laptop

Then it booted my old OS on my new drive and everything was perfect!

Yes, the boot mgr is in the reserved partition in Vista and W7. You should be able to set it up as the active partiton when you set up the restore.
