Bootable Rescue media: USB stick "Missing Operating System"

Thread needs solution

I have TI Home 2009 on WinXP Pro.

I run "Create bootable rescue media" I select my USB stick,
which is 512MB, Acronis copies it's files, I try it, and it's not bootable.

I searched the forum now for a couple hours, trying various things
Reformat, try again - "Missing Operating System"
Reformat to fat32 ,try again - "Missing Operating System"
Boot with stick in, reformat, try again - "Missing Operating System"

plus 1/2 dozen variations of that.... the usb stick just never becomes bootable.

It *IS* listed as "Removable Disk" in My Computer. I have formatted this stick as a
bootable GHOST before, and it worked without any problem.

I see a few alternate options for making it bootable, SYSLINUX, some grub thing with ISOs, and PE

But is it - supposed - to work. simply make a bootable USB TI rescue, just from the TI menu item?
Or did I totally misunderstand... you HAVE to do the syslinux thing first??
I must be missing something here...

Randy:

It's supposed to "just work" and often does. However, USB boot is one area that isn't well standardized between PC makers. To make matters worse, there are several different partitioning standards in use on flash drives including USB-HDD (emulates a fixed disk), USB-ZIP, and USB-FDD. Getting a flash drive to boot can be an exercise in frustration.

You will probably find the following web site by forum MVP MudCrab helpful. It contains both troubleshooting tips for fixing non-booting flash drives and several workarounds for stubborn cases.

And even though it worked with Ghost, because of the make of flash drive is probably why it isn't working with True Image.

Ran "syslinux.exe -ma". manually added the required files, and it works now.

I had a look at your link, K0LO. Too bad after I was done, instead of before, LOL

Restoring a pre-made boot image directly to the device would be a really great way to do it, instead of screwing around all afternoon.

I think this thread might help someone in the future though :-)
