Booting from USB Stick a Tablet with only UEFI Bios

Thread needs solution

I have to clone a Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2 (TT2 in followings), wich has only UEFI bios. I would like to solve it with an USB stick (2 partiotions: 1 FAT for boot, 1 NTFS for store the image.). It works with tablets, without UEFI bios.
But in this case TT2 boots every time into Window 8. I changed the boot sequency with USB on the first place. I disabled secure boot and in Windows edvanced main power turn off configuration disabled fast boot.
I'm reading about WIN PE 4.0 based ISO images, but before I buy only for this an external DVD for the tablet, I would like to ask you, even if I can solve it with a simple USB stick.

Thanks!
Lesley

If you have build 5551, there is a patch that can be added to the recovery environment that solves most problems with UEFI. If you have downloaded the latest build 6514, the patch is included.

maybe the op has secure boot enabled with his tablet pc?
In this case, your solution might not work for the OP if he has a GPT disk. the winpe 4.0 recovery cd build 6514 does not support UEFI secure boot; the linux recovery cd won't see any GPT disk.

Edit: just see the op disabled secureboot. in this case, i think the recovery cd based on winpe 4 should work. OP, did you format your usb boot device as FAT32?

I have the newest build, and the secure boot is disabled, but it works not. I'm going now to buy an USB DVD and try with WIN PE 4.0 to make an ISO image.
Thanks!

Hello everyone,

I own a Lenovo Think Pad Tablet 2 running windows 8
I have formatted a 1 GB USB stick with FAT 32
I have just have downloaded the latest build 6514 from Acronis True Image Home 2013 (trial) and installed it on the tablet
I have created rescue boot disk within Acronis
The tablet does NOT boot on the USB stick. I am able to select the USB, the screen flashes then comes back to boot menu.
I have read in Lenovo documentation that only 32-bit USB could be recognized and boot in the UEFI bios.

One intersting think : on the USB key there is an /EFI/boot directory that contains bootx64.efi and bootx64.xml files (but no 32 versions for these files).

If somebody has found the solution to restore a lenovo Think Pad tablet 2 with acronis 2013? please let us know

Many Thanks
Eric

On new machine you can place secure boot to desable but this do nothing because you can not change UEFI mode boot. So juste change secure boot to uenable do nothing in the bios. Il have a acer W510 tablet and I can not boot usb key becausde the uefi mode is bloked
I hope Acronis made a reel softwar bootable on uefi mode

Just note to other on experience to date with my new Lenovo Helix convertible

1. With latest 2013 downloaded image from acronis support website.. I can boot to rescue media.. This ISO - made into a CD and a USB CD/DVD drive works and see the msata SSD in the Helix and all it's partitions. I can back an image to another a USB HD on he other USB port. For some reason - the rescue media will not write an image to a large USB stick.. image on this helix is currently about 23G... I have not yet tried a restore just on the Helix -- more likely to save image while in windows 8 and update a new spare msata SSD to see if recover is truly an usable image.. but I need to learn to get at the SSD in the Helix to swap it out.. not quite ready for that yet.

2. I did create a 4G USB stick from acronis while in windows 8 on the helix, and this does boot, but unlike the downloaded ISO version on acronis web site. the bootable usb stick does not even show the SSD partitions... likely related to other message on this version not GPT savy or GPT bug...

3. the other issue I have - although not critical as I have a way to restore I believe.. is neither CD or USB recover media see any of the 3 USB Ethernet adaptors I have to save or get to image on my network.. inside windows I save images to a network often from all my PCs. this has work well for several years now.. the helix is the first device I have had where the acronis rescue media cannot see an Ethernet adaptor.. the helix does not one built in except for the wifi -- so wired Ethernet is usb 2 or 3 based adaptors -- that work fine in windows 8, but not on the rescue media.. any fix for this coming...

given other thread -- I think I'm in the boat with others waiting for update version of 2013 beyond 6514

I don't think you are going to have much luck with USB based Ethernet adapters with the Linux version of the recovery media (even in any recent future builds).

Using WinPE based rescue media, you MAY be able to add the driver required for USB to Ethernet adapters.

You would have to have the optional Plus Pack installed to be able to build WinPE media.

The 6528 build ISO (Linux based) that is available from support has the GPT fix.

Until a new full version is released, the GPT fix will not be implemented into the Rescue Media (Linux or WinPE) that the end user can create from within the product.

had Lenovo put a few more standard things in the keyboard dock - like Ethernet port, SD slot -- even another user access mSATA slot. the Helix would have been better.

it is doable to get a the msata SSD in the tablet part, but a fair amount of disassembly -- so once a new full built basically works for GPT and EFI support without error -- I will try a full image recovery test... after I create or get a full factory recovery set of media from Lenovo that can do factory default recovery to the SSD..

my create plan - partially working - is a usb 2.0 WD passport with 2 partitions drive is a 120G old drive- one is the rescue media basically made to boot from that small partition and the rest of the drive is a partition where I have the acronis image to recover

I cannot from within windows 8 on the Helix via the usb 3.0 Ethernet adapter - do a full disk image with all partion on the disk in about 8 minutes to my network image directory.. to recovery I can connect the USB drive to another computer and copy the image to the drive

the rescue media boot on the helix -- sees this old usb drive fine, but it will not see a newer USB 3 1TB WD passport at all

I do wish Acronis would incorporate some USB 3 Ethernet driver and USB 3 HDDs in the rescue media

I am having the same exact issues. From what I read in the attached pdf from Lenovo, the only device you can boot off of is there USB Ethernet Adapter. Honestly, I would settle for one of their USB Keys with Winodws 8.1 on it so that I don't have to install the 3+GB of updates (security and 8.1).

I am having same issues with ASUS T100 Windows 8.1. I have backups but can not restore the set. I have succeeded in creating a boot USB drive with windows Assessment and Deployment Kit. The question today is how to get Acronis to the bootable USB and then execute a recovery. At this time when I boot to USB it boots into Command window.
If I run Acronis and try to recover while in Windows it starts but after required restart there is no Acronis running. I'm guessing Windows 8 can not pass the restart to Acronis Loader. I believe that is what is in the BIOS but never executes.

You can add TI to the USB stick. See http://www.mechrest.com/plugins/ for instructions and download.
