BSOD after upgrade to 2013 from 2012

Thread needs solution

I did the free upgrade from 2012 to 2013 which turned out to be a mistake as now the machine will no longer boot up with a snapman.sys error on the BSOD.

I can boot up in safe mode, should I just get rid of it again and revert to 2012 or am I likely to have the same problem then as well.

Don't want to go down the wrong "fix" route.

If the 2013 installer will run in safe mode, I would run it again and select repair install.

I don't think it will in which case i would download the 2013 registry cleaner, run that and then reboot and install 2013 again.

Registry Cleaner 2012/2013

When you run the cleanup tool that Colin mentions, make sure you follow all the instructions very carefully. In particular, do not let the utility restart your computer. Finalize the registry edits before rebooting.

Still have this problem, I can not cold boot the system and an error "3" flashes up at BIOS level.

In safe mode, I can not remote the program as it states it can not find the files. The only way to get the system back is via the "don't reboot on error" option in Windows 7 and a few "last known good" trials. Then boots up in about 5 attempts after which the system is fine as long as I don't reboot (hybernate is fine).

Will try the registry cleaner again.

Is the best way to install to use the downloaded trial version and insert the registration key when prompted or should I get a different version downloaded? On 5551 build by the way.

Paul,

If the error message is MBR Error 3 this can be ignored for the moment, it means something has changed part of the MBR, in the case of Acronis this is normally if the Secure Zone, Acronis Startup Manager or in the case of Disk Director OS Selector have been activated and then True Image or Disk Director have been uninstalled without deactivating the above beforehand.

Did you have any of these activated with 2012? If you did, download the recovery CD ISO (assuming you don't have a 2012 or 13 one already made), burn it to a CD boot from it and from there you can deactivate the SZ and ASRM.

When you select F8 do you get a 'run previous good version' option and if so does that get you back into Windows?

That was the error indeed.

I only have the Home edition and had not activated anything from the list you mentioned up there. I think it went wrong during the upgrade process as I could no longer reboot after that.

I have just cleaned the registry and reinstalled again, trying to link the old backups back again as the settings were all lost (recreate seems to get them back). Now need to see how I can get the backup scripts back and then test a reboot again.

Thanks for your help Colin by the way.
