BSOD points to Acronis as the culprit

I was running Acronis True Image Home 2009. When syncing my IPod via iTunes I get a Blue Screen. The program "BlueScreenView" says that the cause was tdrpm228.sys, Acronis Try and Decide.

I upgraded to True Image Home 2011. That put a new driver in windows/system/drivers, tdrpm273.sys but also left in place tdrpm228.sys.

I still get Blue Screens when syncing iTunes, and it still blames tdrpm228.sys. Why is that driver even being used at all?

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Thank you for your post and welcome to our forum. I will certainly help you with resolving this issue.

It is most likely a drivers conflict, even though there is a newer version available our program is still trying to use the old one.

We have fixed the "ipod" issue in Acronis True Image 2011 Home. I would recommend to create a valid backup of your system first, just in case and then run our clean up utility. Then, if it is still there, remove the tdrpm228.sys. driver and install Acronis True Image 2011 Home again. I am certain this will fix the problem.

In case of new BSODs, I would really appreciate if you could send me a private message with these reports:

1. AcronisInfo.

2. Windows mini-dumps.

Ran the clean up utility. Looked ok and tdrpm228.sys was gone. At the reboot required after running the cleanup, got a system boot failure. (The black screen with white text saying something like System Failure, boot regularly, safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, etc.) Couldn't boot regularly, couldn't boot in Safe Mode, system repair from the Windows Vista Install disk couldn't find anything.

Thank God for Acronis Backup, I was able to restore the system to it's state before running the cleanup. But the Event Viewer logs are gone, erased when I did the restore.

There is obviously something wrong with my installation of True Image even though it seems to run fine. By the way I did pay for two help sessions first to install the older version and second to install the new.

Thank you very much for the follow-up.

It appears that the clean up utility left some version 2009 traces on your machine which caused this boot failure.

I am glad that you have a valid backup. I can recommend the following workaround then:

Please open the registry editor and find the following keys -

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} - select this key and in the right pane you will have an entry called Upper Filters. Right click on it and select modify. There will be a couple of entries there, make sure to delete only the one called tdrpman228

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{71A27CDD-812A-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F} - please do the same as above.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\tdrpman228 - simply delete this key.

After these steps I am certain that you will be able to use Acronis True Image 2011 Home without any interruptions.

I the past couple days, my computer (Vista w/TrueImage 2010) has become more and more sluggish. I rebooted and just as everything was loaded, I get a BSOD. I rebooted 5 times and, every other time, the same thing happens. The Dump Report says this:

I would, of course, prefer not to have to Restore the Hard Drive as JW did after following the suggestion given in the above Post. What other advice can anyone give me?

I would recommend to download and install the latest build of Acronis True Image 2010 Home build 7154, it has the latest updated components. Please refer to this article that shows where to download and how to install the program.

Uninstall the previous version from Add/Remove programs and install the latest build.

I assume that the tdrpmxxx.sys driver has a problem with Win7-64-bit.
My system had a constantly rising amount of BSOD.
With booting in secured mode I could work for hours without any BSOD.
This points into the direction of an faulty driver !
The curious thing is, that it startet somewhere in December 2010 and with Acronis 2010.
Also I´m assuming, that I did update Acronis 2010 around this time with the current patch version.
I was getting mad, installed a backup, but still BSOD (daily!).
So I installed Win7 from the scratch, but this time I installed Acronis 2011 trial to make backups (I planned to buy it anyhow) and to test it.
You may not be surprised, but the BSOD were happening again (daily!).
I installed the Windows debugging tools and they told me that the "tdrpm273.sys" is the potential cause for the ongoing desaster.

The driver was deactivated from me via the MS autorun-tool and I deleted the registry keys as mentioned above (but deleting the 273 driver instead the 228 which was not on my system because of Acronis 2011 instead 2009/2010).
I would recommend Acronis to check this issue and to offer an other solution as deactivating the Acronis Try and Decide feature by deleting the driver and the corresponding registry entries.
Hopefully this workaround will make my Win7 working again without constantly interruptions.
