Looking to purchase ATI 2016  Computer Experience: 1 rung above newbie,  I have read that instead of clone, full backup is recommended. Does my external HDD have to be reformatted ? Or can i backup to a partly filled disk?  W7 I want to BU entire computer, with OS  about 70-80 Gb, 400,000 image files.  Thanks

Yes you can if there is enough space. How much free space and what is the total size of the external drive?

Thank you kindly, Thomas.    Free Space would be 300Gb   Backup 80Gb? roughly.  1Tb drive.  I'll be purchasing ATI in the New Year, and may buy a dedicated 2Tb drive as well.  I was originally going to "clone" each backup, but a poster on Whirlpool has found me an backup image software that saves in natural format which is super. (it backs up only altered files saving me hours)    I still need to clone at least once in case of HDD failure.  Happy New Year Thomas.

If you make a "Disk Image Backup" then cloning is not needed. A disk image backup, the preferred method, can be used to restore your system in the event of a HDD failure. Cloning will work but can sometimes be less than satisfactory and is only a snapshot of the disk at a specific point in time. I reccomend using a regularly scheduled "Disk Mode" backup.
