Bugged shortcuts

Thread needs solution

Programs want to dump their shortcuts on the desktop. You get the choice to make one or not, only somtimes do you get the option where and then, often I've had other programs when selecting a location other then default. ATI installed 2 short cuts on the desktop. I moved them to a folder on the desktop by dropping them on the folder. Last night I tried moving the shortcut for Ventrillo to the same folder, but did it while the folder was open and found that when the shortcut was dropped in the folder, it lost it's icon. Checking properties it still showed correct but it was using the generic windows shortcut. Trying to change it back went through the steps, but nothing happened. I moved the short cut back to the desktop and as soon as I released it, it went back to the proper Icon. I then noticed that 1 of the Acronis icons had also changed to the windows generic. The shortcut for One Touch backup is correct, but the main program is not. Checking properties, again, it had the correct icon in the upper left but it would not change. Moving it back to the desktop also did not fix it. I'm assuming because the computer had gone through a few reboots with the icon moved

I also noticed that when trying to change the icon, I got the admin rights requirment popup even though I am on an admin account. allowing the change, did not make it change. So what is with these icons being locked to the desktop? other icons move just fine. And the ventrillo icon can be pined to the taskbar correctly. tried moving to the folder while pined and the pined icon remained correct but the moved one still changed to generic. Pining the now screwed up acronis icon only pins a generic icon to the task bar.

When moving the icons it appears that you are changing the needed path to the application. Instead, from a correct shortcut icon, do a copy and then paste it wherever you want.

That would imply the exe is moving but it's just the shortcut that is being moved. The path to the target isn't being changed.

I Also noticed that the icon for the launcher exe it self is now showing generic icon and that file wasn't moved. I was able to set the shortcut to point to the main exe and the icon there worked. On the shortcut for ventrillo there is only 1 exe and it also is showing the generic instead of it's internal and you can't change the icon for exe's. Because there is no other file to target, I can't change the icon for that shortcut.

I did not mean to imply that the path to the executable was being changed - only the shortcut to it.

I still don't understand how that would effect the icon it show. That path should point to the exe which holds the icon just as the short cut also points to the file it is a shortcut to. Shortcuts are basicly files that have pointers to other files. You move the shortcut all it's pointers should move with it. Windows checks it when you open the folder with that shortcut to see what it should display for that shortcut.

Keep in mind that the 2 exe's these problem shortcuts point to don't even use the icon themselfs even though its IN the exe and those exe's have not been moved.

Timothy:

TI icons have been a perennial problem with this program. The installer must be doing something incorrect when registering the icons. See this thread for potential fixes:
