Can I trust my Acronis backups?

Thread needs solution

Product: Acronis True Image Home 2010

Reading the comparison of products, I've discovered that the Home versions do not support VSS, and therefore the possibility of consistent backups of open files, databases, etc., 'while windows is running'. The 'solution' presented is to buy the $800+ server versions if you have databases, but what about system state and other system-locked or open files?

If I use the Windows-running version of ATIH2010 (not boot disk) to do a full (complete disk backup), can I do a bare metal restore with that backup and get an operational OS? (i.e., is the system state backed up, and all open system files?) Without VSS, can you actually get a consistent backup without the holes left by open files that were skipped when the backup was executed?

Is the ONLY option with the Home versions to actually boot to the recovery disk and run your backup there? Not very useful for scheduling if that is the case. Anybody know?
