Can no longer perform backups

Thread needs solution

Running TI Home 2010 (build 7.160) on Windows 7 Pro 64bit, but last month it started
producing an error when the scheduled incremental back launches and then it fails to
perform the backup. As far as I am aware of nothing changed except for 2 things; routine
MS Symantec NAV updates.

"Cannot create an incremental backup because the drive is empty or is not ready.
Insert media with the last volume of the multi-volume backup and click Retry.

Operation paused
time stamped: Insert the last volume of the multi-volume backup for appending an
incremental backup...."

I can browse and restore files without issue and I just applied the update to make 2010
current with no change to the error. I don't plan on spending any more money for the TI
2011 upgrade until this is fixed. I've also read a ridiculous amount in the forum while searching for a solution but cannot find anything that helps.

To which location are you saving your backups? It is possible our software cannot access your backup location properly.

Could you create a new backup task and check how well it performs? Could you also try backing up to a different location?

Also, could you send me this report just in case, it will show if you have any errors on your hard drives.

The back ups have been going onto a 1TB USB drive that is always plugged into the same USB
port. No new pieces of hardware or software have installed except for the regular updates
from Microsoft and Adobe. Things had been working as advertised for months...

So I created a backup (as you suggested) of a single file and that completed successfully.

I ran the info collection tool and sent you the report directly. Hopefully there will be something useful in it.

I was able to study the logs that you sent me via a private message and found some errors there:

The first part of the logs with the words "Insert the last volume" means that our software does not find other backups files which are required for a successful incremental backup. The File I/O error message means that either your PC or our software has issues with accessing your hard drive.

Also, it is difficult to understand what exactly causes File I/O errors and how to fix them, but you can try these 2 external resources so that we can eliminate a faulty hard drive. Please check this and this link.

Thanks for reviewing the file Anton. I know that I've been able to succesfully retrieve individual files off of the backup drive but perhaps I've been lucky and not touched upon a bad sector. The same drive is used to backup 2 different PC's and that other system's backups continue without issue. I'll check the drive with your recommended tools and report back.

Ok I ran many tests, even the ones from WDC and the drive is good. The only test I didn't run was the "write all zeros" as I didn't feel like copying all that data to yet another drive. But so far it says there is no fault to be found. I've also been able to access many files directly on the drive without issue. So should I just remove all the old backups and start over? Does that mean something became corrupt and will again?

You could start over and check if this corruption occurs again. Also, would it be possible for you to setup an identical backup job but this time make the backup location an internal hard drive?

Sure thing Anton. I'll do a backup to the local drive this evening when I get a chance and report back. My concern is the amount of local disk space available to perform that 1st incremental backup as that is really a full backup that starts the process.
