Cannot access bsckup

Thread needs solution

I backup to an external disc. Full disc C backup. Every week. I am now on backup 9. As the disc fills up I delete old backups. Keeping the last 3 plus the incremental backups. Trying to recover files I get a message saying "cannot find version 6". If I tell it to ignore it looks for version 5 and so on. I cannot make it access version 9.

Douglas, how are you deleting old backups - are you doing this via Windows Explorer?

If so, then you run the risk that the Acronis database store gets out of sync with your backup tasks and this gives rise to the messages you are seeing about missing versions / backups.

If you delete any incremental backups from an existing version chain then you break the whole version chain as you cannot have any gaps in a set of incrementals, hence if version 6 or 5 of the chain is deleted, then no later numbered versions will be valid as the chain is broken.

The only way around this is to do a Validation of the whole version chain, taking the option to ignore all missing / deleted backups until ATIH is 'happy' that the database is back in sync and it knows what images are present and can be used.

The recommended method of managing the free space on your external drive is to use the automatic cleanup rules within ATIH to specify what should be kept, for how long, how many versions, how much free space must remain etc.

I would recommend taking a browse through the Best Practices Forum where you will find a lot of examples of doing the above, especially within Grovers pages of accumulated wisdom.

OK I see Marty had the same problem so I know what to do. Pity I didn't know before. Could have been a disaster.
