Cannot explore backup

Thread needs solution

I have recently upgraded to TrueImage Home 2009.

I cannot explore .tib backups in windows explorer or within TrueImage.  When I try within TrueImage, a "processing" window pops up for a second then disappears.

I am using Windows XP.

Thanks for help.

I had a similar problem until I removed Bit Defender Internet Security from my computer. BD fouled up another similar software too.

Hello Joe and Fungus,

Thank you for choosing Acronis Disk Backup Software.

Yes, the suggestion to disable firewall and antiviral sofrware is good, please try it.

Also, to fix this issue you can either uninstall Acronis True Image and install the latest build anew or uninstall the Acronis TrueImage Backup Archive Explorer module (the old one) from the Windows Device Manager and delete the following Windows registry key:

  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\tibfile\Shell\explore key

Please let us know the results.

We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.

Thank you.

For the build number, hit the Alt key and the familiar menu with Help will appear above.  The latest build is 9796

Hello all,

Thank you for using Acronis Products

Make sure that Acronis True Image Backup Archive Explorer is Enabled in Device Manager (Right-click on MY Computer -> Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> Unfold Acronis Devices -> Right-click on Acronis Devices -> Select Acronis True Image Backup Archive Explorer -> Choose Enabled).

Vista 32 bit,

Hello Dmitry

Thanks for your reply. Yes it is enabled but I still cannot explore.

Do you have any other suggestions please.

Hello together, I have the same problem with Acronis Home 2009 and also with 2010. I have no such key in the registry, in HW Manager the Exlorer ist also enabled.

Is there any solution?

Regard, Christian

I still have the problem which is being investigated by Acronis.
Are you able to mount an image ?

Regards
Eddie

Yes, I am able to mount the image. But only, if the image is full partition image. A normal image, I am not able to mount.

Regards
Christian

I recently purchased TI 2010 and installed it yesterday on an XP machine in my network.

Using Windows Explorer, I can view OLD backups created with TI 11. Attempting to view any new archives created with TI 2010 produces this message ...

"An error occured when opening the backup archive. Cannot continue the operation due to either the backup is corrupted or it is used by another process, for example the backup has been mounted as a disk"

My system does not have HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\tibfile\Shell\explore key

Backup Archive Explorer IS enabled.

Wayne

Also on my system: there is no regkey "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\tibfile\Shell\explore key"

Is there any documentation to "install" such key?

I installed also the last update (Home 2010) with no success, I'm not able to open Acronis backups with the explorer.

I found this after looking for exactly the same problem. On earlier builds I was able to use Windows Explorer to look at files within an image. Now I cannot. I have followed all the advice above and just finished re-installing the latest build, 6053 of True Image Home 2010. The registry key mentioned is not present.

Any updates on this, Acronis?

I am running Vista Home Prem SP2 and Acronis TI 2009 and having the same issue.. I cannot explore any of my back ups nor can i mount them.
Please help!

Having same problem with TI 11 with XP SP3. Can't explore a .tib file. Also do not have the HKCR\tibfile registry key. I see that in 2294, to get rid of TI context menu references, the suggestion is to delete the HKLM\Software\Classes\tibfile key, which I did. Is there any connection here??

I repaired the TI11 installation which brought back the context menu entries. I used the 8101 build install file (TrueImage11.8101_s_en.exe). After the repair, I could explore archives. I then deleted just the two following keys to get rid of the context menu references:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{C539A15A-3AF9-4c92-B771-50CB78F5C751}

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\{C539A15A-3AF9-4c92-B771-50CB78F5C751}

And I can still explore archives.

Hi all,

I have spent several hours on the telephone over this problem with Acronis. Done numerous tests for them and emailed and uploaded results to their server.
I have even let them have remote control of my computer.
Guess what -- the issue is not resolved. I gave up when they wanted further telephone contact.

In my view there are some serious issues with TI2009 and TI2010 for which Acronis don't appear to have any answers. These issues did not occur prior to TI2009.

Its been a long while now since Acronis has even replied to this board.

Come on Acronis please sort your software problem out.

Eddie

Hello all,

Sorry for the delayed response. Let me update you regarding mount issue.

First of all, HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\tibfile\Shell\explore key may be not created under your system, so you should just skip its deletion and simply reinstall the product.

We have one common issue with mounting backups created from Standalone Version of the product.

  1. You boot from Acronis True Image Home 2010 Bootable Media and create a backup of your disks or partitions;
  2. You boot in Windows 7 or Windows Vista and try to mount or open the created backup;
  3. The operation fails with the following error message:

    An error occurred while opening the backup archive.
    Cannot continue the operation as either the backup is corrupted or it is
    being used by another process, for example the backup has been
    mounted as a disk.

The cause is that User account under which you are logged in Windows and are trying to mount or open the backup does not have enough security permissions for the file.

You should set full security permissions to the backup file:

  • Right-click on the backup file and click Properties -> Security;
  • On the Security tab click Continue (Windows 7) or Edit (Windows Vista).

After that, proceed with the instructions (with the screenshots) from the special article.

This will be fixed in a future update of Acronis True Image Home 2010.

Thank you for your understanding. Please feel free to ask me if something is not clear for you from the instructions I provided above.

Best regards,

Hello Alexander,
Thanks for your delayed reply.

The issue is not being able to explore. This is the case whether it is a "Stand Alone TI" or not.

Your respose is not relevant to this issue or Thread

Even though this topic is old, it is one of the first ones that show up on Google for searches on the problem with Acronis 11 exploring or mounting images, so I figured I'd do a quick post for clarification of the last advice posted by Acronis engineers.

For clarification, the fix recommended 2 posts above this by Alexander of Acronis QA on 2010-01-19 DID indeed fix the problem for me with trying to explore or mount images created using a bootdisk made by the same version of Acronis that I am using to explore the image with. However, it did NOT fix the problem when trying to explore or mount images made with a bootdisc from PRIOR versions of Acronis TrueImage.

Just in case that helps anyone.

Windows XP SP3
Acronis® True Image Home® version 11.0 (build 8,101)

Cannot explore backup.

There is no HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\tibfile\Shell\explore key.
In Device Manager, Acronis True Image Backup Archive Explorer is enabled,
and R-TT Backup Archive Explorer is enabled.

I enabled Backup Archive Explorer, then re-started Acronis.
When I select any full backup archive, I see an hourglass cursor for a few seconds, then nothing.

Do I need to pay $29.99 to upgrade to a newer version to overcome this bug?

(Actually, it doesn't matter, since Windows Explorer can extract files from the full backup archives.)
