Cannot recover data from backup

Thread needs solution

I am moving from one laptop to another. I have a file backup made from the old laptop running Windows 7 and True Image 2013. The backup in on a USB disk.
I installed a trial version of True Image 2014 on the new laptop running Windows 8 (since that was what was available) and using this I can read the backup on the USB disk, but when I select the contents of the backup (all the files) that I want to install on the new laptop and select "Recover" it doesn't extract the files from the backup and restore them.
The software asks me where I want to recover the files, and I have tried using Original Location (since the path is the same) and also explicitly selecting the path using the New Location option. Either way when I press Recover Now nothing happens.

Robin,

Can you confirm, what type of backup did you originally make, a complete disk or partition image or a file and folders backup?

Are you able to explore the tib file?

If possible could you post some screen shots?

You might have better success using the recovery CD. Do you still have a 2013 recovery media?

Does the file validate?

I'm wondering if W8 is hvaing a 'premissions' problem, this normally shows up as files being of zero bytes and not accessible though.

It was a file and folders backup.

I can explore the tib file and can copy from it to the hard disk of the laptop. This successfully installs the files, but it is a more tedious process to do this and I don't think I should have to.

Yes, I can post some screen shots, but I am not sure what would show something useful. Got any suggestions?

Recovery media? I don't think I created any, but I still have the original laptop with ATI 2013 installed.

In trying to recover files from the backup I follow the instructions in the help file, which says:

Recovering data from file-level backups

You will usually start recovering files and folders from Acronis Backup Explorer. When recovering a specific file version, you will start recovery from the View Versions window. In either case, starting recovery opens the File Recovery window.

Let's consider recovery of files and folders from the Backup Explorer.

  1. Select in the Backup Explorer the files and folders you want to recover. For more information on selection in the Backup Explorer see Files and folders tab. Click Recover to start recovery. This will open the File Recovery window.
  2. Select a destination on your computer to where you want to recover selected files/folders. You can recover data to its original location or choose a new one, if necessary. To choose a new location, click the Browse... button.
  3. When you choose a new location, the selected items will be recovered by default without recovering the original, absolute path. You may also wish to recover the items with their entire folder hierarchy. In this case select the Recover absolute path check box.
  4. When needed, set the options for the recovery process (recovery process priority, file-level security settings, etc.). To set the options, click the File recovery options link. The options you set here will be applied only to the current recovery operation.
  5. To start the recovery process, click the Recover now button.
  6. The recovery progress will be shown in a special window. You can stop the recovery by clicking Cancel. Please keep in mind that the aborted recovery may still cause changes in the destination folder.

==[Copy End]======================================================

The only thing is that after I click the Recover now button, the File Recovery window closes and nothing happens. No error message, no "special window".

Robin,

I'm not sure what the problem is, obviously if you try to recover the files to their original place that isn't going to work as W7s original place doesn't exist on W8 (even if you have named the folders the same, the hidden SSID and links just won't match the new install), but I would expect an explicit path would.

I would suggest trying it from a recovery CD (you can make one with your 2013 and with 2014 which will be recovery only). When using the recovery environment Windows won't get in the way, so user account settings etc won't apply. It would be interesting to know if the 2013 recovery environment succeeds and the 2014 one doesn't.

I did a backup yesterday on my Win8SP1 with update. I can see the ati image file via my windows explorer. However, when I run ATI, go to the recover menu, the backup is not available to recover. Says waiting to do backup.

Why can't I restore/recover yesterday's backup when I can see it was completed?

I can go into recover mode, do a browse to the file and tell it to add the backup, however it doesn't.

This backup was made to a 4tb drive. I can see the drive and file, but cannot restore.

My win8 drive got hosed on a microsoft update and I really need to be able to recover the backup to restore it.

Whassup?

Perhaps you might try a different recovery method. To restore specific data, you have various options:

- You can boot from the ATI bootable Rescue Media and choose a files/folders restore, selecting the files and folders you wish to restore.

- If ATI is installed, you could mount the backup and copy files/folders from it to the drive.

- If ATI is installed, you could double-click the backup to open it in Windows Explorer, then copy files/folders from it to the drive.

- Within ATI, right-click on the backup you wish to restore from and select "Recover Files".

That gives you four methods, so at least one should suit you. :)
