Cannot stop Acronis Backups!

Thread needs solution

I have Acronis True Image Home 2014 installed on my new Windows 8.1 laptop. I had previously used it on an older laptop and acronis transferred the license or whatever they needed to do so I could install it on the new one. That is not the problem.

I backup to an encrypted external HDD. As soon as I connect the usb HD to the laptop, Acronis starts backing up to the external HD. I assume this is a previously started backup. I want to set up new backups from scratch but I can't find out how to stop the ongoing automatic backups that are going on. I cannot delete the files being produced because Windows tells me they are open in Acronis - even when I shut down Acronis! I can't even disconnect the external HD because Windows tells me it is in use. Help! Acronis has taken over my PC!

The Acronis interface I see when I start Acronis does not seem to have anywhere where I can stop these automated or previously started backups.

My questions:
1. where is this ongoing backup listed in Acronis and how do I stop it and delete it?
2. How do I prevent this from happening again?

Thank you.

OK. I resolved that one, I think.

I am now creating a new backup to the external HD, and was careful to remove the option about scheduling since this is a laptop and is only intermittently connected to the external HD. But I have more questions:

1. Previous versions of Acronis TI had a screen that showed the progress of the backup. Did they remove that? This ATI 2014, just went blank when I started the backup. Is there a way to restore the convenient progress screen?

2. I wonder if Acronis will agree to exchange my ATI 2014 for a 2013 version? Anybody know? I heard ATI 2015 was bad but 2014 isn't that great either. Maybe I should move to Macrium Reflect if they will not let me downgrade.

3. Only incremental and differential backups appear to be available. How does one do a Full backup?

Please advise.

Acronis is NOT running in compatibility mode

Version TI 2013 is not compatible with Windows 8.1
