Can't backup to network drive

Thread needs solution

I am trying to backup to a network drive using Acronis True Image 2014. It asks for the login credentials to connect to the destination workstation. It asks for a username and password. The destination workstation has a username and no password but I can't click on the connect button unless a password is entered. The connect button is disabled until an entry is made in the password field.

This may help:

When using ATI with a network drive, use a UNC path to your NAS device for a backup destination, not a typical friendly "mapped" drive. e.g.
\\192.168.2.25\My Backups\

It should also be possible to use a UNC path that includes server name rather than IP, such as
\\server1\My Backups\

ATI will not automatically detect a NAS drive. Once you start typing the destination path (click "Browse", type in the "File name" field), you will be prompted for a username and password. You must use enter the username and password that has permissions to access the NAS share you are saving to.

Many users have issues with NAS, not because of True Image but because the router gets overloaded with data throughput and cannot keep a consistent enough connection with the NAS for True Image to image or restore. Certain models of router and known to suffer from this issue.

A user shared this:

From the "Destination drop down list in the backup dialog box" choose "Browse ..."
In the "Browse for Destination" dialog, enter the UNC path for your drive in the "File name:" input field.
If the "Authentication Settings" dialog does not pop up, click the blue arrow button to the right of the "File name:" input field so it does pop up,
Enter the login info for your share

Thanks for the suggestion. The problem is not locating the NAS device. It is entering the known credentials for the device which includes a blank password. The connection is not possible unless a password is entered but there is no option to enter a blank password. The connect button is disabled until as password is entered.

Acronis support,

Any update on this? I'm having the same problem. NAS drive is connected to network through USB port on Belkin Wireless N Router. I am unaware of a way to change use access settings (login or password) to NAS through Belkin router. Factory default (Login: Guest, Password: [blank]) allows windows to map the drive and read/modify/delete content with full access. Surely Acronis should be able to handle network locations that require login credentials with blank password. If not, it's useless in this setup. Please help!

GRN3936,

How do you access this attached drive in Windows Explorer? I assume that you type in the router ip address followed by the volume name of the hard drive, is this correct?

I just navigate to the network folder in windows explorer. Acronis support said that I just have to create a windows user account with a password and the necessary permissions on the target machine. And I don't have to be logged into that account on that machine for backups to work. I'm yet to try it out.

Acronis TI uses the Windows account logon from which the application was installed for credential purposes. Are you running Win 7? You have never created a user account on your machine?

Do you have a "Homegroup" or "Workgroup" setup for your network?

Enchantech,

Thanks for your reply.

To access the router's external storage, I map a new network drive (My Computer->Map Network Drive) and use the address format exactly as you described. For the Belkin + external hard drive setup I have, this is \\192.168.2.1\sda1. Windows then asks for credentials for the drive. According to Belkin support, the credentials are Username: Guest with no password (blank). These credentials allow the drive to successfully map in Windows and after entering them as described, I have full access to the drive contents in this manner.

The problem is that when I try to save a new backup to that mapped drive, ATI asks me again for credentials, which I assume would be the same as were used to map the drive in Windows Explorer. However, ATI will not allow me to leave the password blank, as the "connect" button is greyed until a password is entered.

If this were a shared drive on a network computer, I would simply go to that computer and change the security settings or add a password to the "Guest" account. However, the router provides no interface to do this. I suspect the Belkin is running some Linux distro, and unless there's some backdoor telnet access into the router, I don't expect to be able to change the password of the Guest account.

The PC running ATI is running Windows Vista. I will try to turn off "password protected sharing" as described in the thread below, but I'm skeptical that the issue resides on the PC running ATI. Rather, I suspect it is a security setting on the external storage host (the router).

Nevertheless, I'll post an update after attempting the above.

Thanks!

I understand what it going on with your situation better now. What I can tell you is that when you install ATI the installation sets permissions according to the Windows account the installation is performed under so it is recommended that an installation is therefore under an account with administrator privileges. So when the ATI app prompts for credentials it is asking or looking for Windows User Account logon credentials for the user account under which it was installed.

Is this backup you are trying to performed a scheduled backup? I am attaching a link that may provide some benefit for determining user account and credential requirements for ATI:

I think your suspicion of the router credentials being what is needed here may be incorrect. Hopefully with the info here you will find an answer.
