Can't backup using BartPE and Truecrypt

Thread needs solution

I want to backup a Truecrypt-encrypted volume while booted from a BartPE disc. Booting from the disc I first use Truecrypt to decrypt the volume (creating a new mount point for the unencrypted contents, then I try to back it up using True Image. Unfortunately, True Image seemingly refuses to see any volumes that have been added since boot time in bartPE. It continues only to show the encrypted volume. Other backup utilities — Driveimage XML for one — (which Truecrypt was supposed to replace) see the unencrypted volume just fine. Is there anything I can do about this? I would hate to think that True Image has less functionality in this regard than a basic free imaging utility with a very slow development cycle.

Hello Gordon,

Thank you for using Acronis Products

I would recommend you create Acronis bootable disc using media Builder within the program and see if the issue persists. Please let us know the results.

Unfortunately as far as I can tell it is not possible to add non-Acronis programmes to an Acronis rescue disc. To backup the contents of the encrypted drive without a sector-by-sector backup I would need to have Truecrypt on the rescue disc. This is the reason I used the BartPE disc in the first place.

Tried this a while ago:

You can mount the encrypted partition using truecrypt, while in PE.

The system then sees another drive letter , which is usable. The original drive is still "unknown".

Unfortunately, True Image didn't handle this as normal partition, only file backup was possible.

Afair it was ATI H 10, maybe there is a chance in future releases (just kidding...).

IMHO there are two ways:
1) Backup the original sector by sector
2) Decrypt and backup.

hth :-)
