Can't clone my HP Win7 disk to my HDD

Thread needs solution

Hi,

Yesterday I wanted to clone my C drive of my HP 4720s (Win7) to my new SSD drive but no way to select the source drive (or partition) as it seems to be in dynamic mode
I'm using TrueImage 2013 HD

Any clues to do this ?

Eric,
I suggest that you not try to Clone and instead perform a full disk image back up of the existing disk. Perform this operation using an acronis boot CD. If you don't have one, you can download an image from your acronis user account.

Do this first.. Look at Disk Management and note the size and drive letters of your existing partitions - All of them. If you like, you can even give them more meaningful names such as C (OS)... and D (data) for example

Once you have the full disk image created, remove the old drive from your 4720 and install the new SSD in its place. Boot again from the Acronis boot media and select restore. Restore each partition one at a time, starting with the first partition... using your notes or screen capture of the Disk Management. You might find that the meaningful names you assigned previously will help you identify the correct partitions since drive letters do change in the recovery environment.

You do not need to reboot between each operation, just do them one at a time and in sequence. You can adjust the size of the recovered partitions as well, making them larger or smaller as you wish. I do not recommend changing the sizes of a OEM, recovery or system partition... but the OS and data partitions are safe to change. You'll see the layout of your "new drive" taking shape. Now remove the boot CD and restart your machine. If you have any problems let us know and I'm sure one of the many users here would be happy to assist you further.

TrueImage 2013 HD is a limited functionality version of True Image 2013 for OEMs to bundle with their products. True Image 2014 Premium is the only product that can back up or restore dynamic disks with significant caveats.

(From the Manual)
* Limitations on operations with dynamic and GPT disks:
 Operations with dynamic disks are available only in Acronis True Image 2014 Premium.
 Creation of Acronis Secure Zone on dynamic disks is not supported.
 Recovery of a dynamic volume as a dynamic volume with manual resizing is not supported.
 Try&Decide® cannot be used for protecting dynamic and GPT disks.
 "Clone disk" operation is not supported for dynamic disks.

Now through December 31 it can be purchased for $49.99 for a full license. However you may be able to use the True Image 2013 HD license to purchase it for the upgrade price of $29.99.

Based on the listed limitations, I think the product would be useless for you. It still wouldn't be able to clone your dynamic disk to your SSD, and you would have to resize your partitions to fit your SSD prior to backing up and restoring it to your new drive. You may want to explore other backup solutions with better dynamic disk support.

Your best bet would probably be just doing a clean installation and avoid using dynamic disks entirely on your new installation.

Pardon me for not picking up on the "HD". It was late and I thought it was a typo. All of what Joey said is true. There is no real benefit to using a dynamic disk in a single disk scenario. GPT is another story depending on your needs.

Thx for the support tips : you're right this product is useless
My hard disk was the installed that way (HP master) using dynamic disk mecanism

I'll try to backup the C partition then restore it to the new SSD using the USB boot CD if I can manage to have it working (see my other post)

>Perform this operation using an acronis boot CD. If you don't have one, you can download an image from your acronis user account.
=> not available on my account or due to the OEM part

Eric,
You can download a trial of 2014 boot cd from Acronis.com. You don't have to own a product to try it. It has a limited usage window, but you should be able to tell if it will be able to work with your hardware.

Finally got a USB bootable stick with TrueImage 2014 trial but it won't backup (limited functionnalty don't know why)
Will try with other tools than Acronis which was my favorite years ago but now it's crap

There aren't going to be many tools that can do much with dynamic disks. Only the premium or professional editions of the recovery products will be able to perform any kind of action on them. Your best bet will be finding a product to convert your disk to basic.

I ONLY want the C: Drive to be CLONED to my SSD (don't care about the other partitions, the content my C: drive fits onto my SSD; I will try to reduce size to match before copying the partition) but after doing this , Win7 don't boot (winload x00000e issue)
As my disk is working, I'm not sure converting it to basic won't screw everything including my bootable disk
Will try with AOMEI and/or STRELEC disks which are reported to work , will give feedback
