Can't get NonStop started ... Windows 7 Pro issue?

Thread needs solution

Hi,

Recently upgraded PC operating system from Win XP SP3 32 bit Home Premium to Win 7 64 bit Professional.

ATIH does not seem to like this new setup. Two issues standout,

1. I setup NonStop to monitor 4 different hard drives I have accumulated over time and assign them to NonStop to a 2Tb eSata external hard drive. I keep getting that 0x00D60021+0x0000FFF0 error. Further research has not helped me understand why and how to fix.

Since I have not done a non-stop previously, had to wait for the 2 TB hard drive to arrive, it is possible? that I am doing the process setup incorrectly but, it sure seems simple enough. Knowledgebase and forum searches did not help me.

2. Separtely, when I did a files backup of two separate hard drives, the backup was made but the processing window was stuck on "initializing" the whole time. It did not seem to effect anything when I just 'x'd out of this 'initializing' window.

Previous to Windows 7 Professional 64 bit upgrade, I had had no issues using AITH either to Clone my C Drive regularly and, also, a backup of two different hard drives, as touched upon in # 2., above, with no problems.

Ideas? Suggestions?

Thanks.

John

What version and build of TIH are you using?

If it is possible can you try the external drive via USB rather than eSata. eSata can be flaky, but double check the state of your sata cable.

If it works via USB then the problem is narrowed down, if it doesn't then there is some other problem.

This is spooky!

I had this type of "non Stop backup won't start" when I used ATIH 2010 - just over a year ago!

After a protracted, well meaning but ultimately unsuccessful period of "support" I gave up, asked for and got a refund.

After building a brand new and gorgeous Win 7 64bit system and receiving deal offers via email I read a few reviews and convinced myself the product had improved enough for another shot. Yesterday I bought the upgrade to 2011 with the plus add on for a very good price!

Now the disk imaging, general file backup and disaster recovery seem to be working just fine and that's all I need really but I thought I'd just try the Non Stop Backup (the source of all the problems last year) just to see how much it had improved. After all, they've had loads of time to get it right and I'm running a 64bit system with 4gb ddr3 ram. You know what???

SAME PROBLEM AS LAST YEAR!

Has anyone got any idea what this problem is and how to fix it? OR do I have to send an email to the UK Support Manager again?

Simon,

When you say 'bought the upgrade' do you mean you've installed an upgrade version of 2011 over the 2010 version?

Hi Colin

No, I uninstalled the 2010 version long ago when I still had my old PC.

2011 was a fresh install on a new box. I entered my new activation code (or whatever it's called) for the upgrade and then entered the code for 2010 to prove I had the license for the earlier copy.

BTW I've just gone into services.msc and restarted the afcdpsrv service and set it to restart itself if it failed again - I remember this from before!! It paused again but has just restarted as I'm typing this.

Clearly it's not happy and I'll switch it off soon as I don't want it messing with the overall stability of my system.

I can't believe this hasn't been fixed! It must be costing them a fortune in support calls.

(oops, it just paused again)

Simon,

Thanks for the info.

I solved the problem of non-stop backup by setting up a software RAID redundant backup using two hard drives of the same size and make.

Very easy to setup in Windows 7. No problems. No hassles. Works 24/7 without attention.

I solved the AITH 2010 problem by uninstalling it. No more hassles.

Hi John

Hmm, that's interesting - what's the theory behind that then? How would RAIDing up a couple of drives make a difference? Presumably the software still sees it as backup media. It obviously worked for you and I thank you for the suggestion but it would involve me in further expense of another 1TB USB drive. I think this should be fixed finally to work the way the manual says it should work.

Acronis state that an external USB 2.0 HD should be fine so it would be good if one of their support team could come back with a fix for this after all this time. Do any Acronis support staff monitor these threads? I think they probably should...

Simon,

Waiting on Acronis to 'fix' this issue became the issue itself, of frustration and delay. The RAID solution is what, to me, NonStop was doing but, RAID works, for me. No monitoring and importantly an immediately duplicated and ready-to-go C Drive. Only have to re-assign as the new main C Drive should the original C Drive die, get corrupted, etc.

Bottom-line, I got tired of waiting on Acronis, wrote off the software as a bad investment. It became a matter of economics to me. My personal time cost of manually having to continue to make, supervise and manage periodic backups, system restores, mirror images, etc. The cost of a 1 TB these days seems to be $50, on sale, to $65.

How much is my time worth? Took 30 minutes to setup the RAID plus an automated 1-2 hours for the two drives to get in synch.

John

Ah John, the penny has dropped,

Absolutely see what you mean now. I find it incredible, but no surprise whatsoever, that the support people aren't monitoring these forums to pick up these little grievances and put a stop to them (cummon Acronis guys, prove me wrong....).

I shall carry on with the rest of their backup system as I said but will watch with interest (again) as they try to fix this non-stop-backup-that-keeps-stopping problem. Will it, I wonder, become enough of an embarrassment to them that they stop advertising the Non Stop element of their service until it actually works?

Incidentally, I went with the Genie non-stop product when Acronis refunded my money after 2010 and Genie's offering worked very well. Unfortunately the rest of their backup options weren't as good.

Well anyway, I'm glad RAID is working for you. When I can afford a Qnap NAS system I'll RAID four hot-swappable drives together and backup to Amazon S3.

All the best

Non-Stop Back up will not function, despite repeated attempts (I followed instructions in 'content 3290 and 3337) to get it to do so but same problem recurs. After clicking onto control the function automatically switches itself back to the OFF position. Since my last e/m to you I have had no reply beyond an advert wanting me to update to their 2011 version - at further cost to me. I am definitely not happy with this product or Acronis' lack of response.
