Can't get past 0x00640005 error

Thread needs solution

New install or product - upgrade from 2009. Trying to backup to a USB HD. Always found it easier to delete the old archives and start afresh. so deleted as usual.
I back up C drive to one partition and D drive to another.

Backup fails every time right at the start with the above error code. I have followed the Knowledge base which says it can't rename or move an archive. There are none! It directs me to an archives.xml file which has very little in it. Tried renaming it to no avail. Suggests that some other process may be using the archive - there are no main programs running. Tried disabling Antivirus - to no avail.

It doesn't matter if I try full instead of incremental, C backup or D backup.
I now have no backup (as I deleted the archives) and no way to get this blessed software working.

I'm going to bed now. I would be really happy if someone posts the answer to all my prayers here for when I get up in the morning!

Hello Pete,

Thank you for posting your question, I will be happy to help.
Could you please provide us with the log file of the failed operation in txt format?
- Launch the program;
- Tasks and logs, Log;
- Choose the log entry which contains errors and make right-click on it;
- Select save option and specify the desired location for the log file to save to;
- Attach the log file to your next post.
Also, could you please save the archive to internal hard drive (i.e. backup C:\ and save the archive to D:\ partition, or vice versa) and see if the issue remains?
This information will help me to investigate the issue thoroughly and provide you with a possible solution.
We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience. If the provided information is not clear or if you have any other questions do not hesitate to post them and we will be glad to answer.
Thank you.

As I could not get a response from anyone and I was in a situation with no backups, I decided to delete the installation and reinstall TI Home 2009.

This appears to have sorted my problem in that i can get a backup.

I woul think it is unlikely that I will ever do an upgrade with Acronis again, as it is not possible to get help directly from the Company for their product. If the answer is not in the knowledgebase then there is nowhere to turn to. Unless thet Company sort out proper support arrangements (email support would have been fine), then I will not hand over my cash to the Company - that's the way Business's fail and they don't realise until it is too late!

Hello Pete,

Thank you very much for your reasonable response. We will take into consideration your opinion and will do our best to improve the situation.

However, if you want to use Acronis Backup & Security 2010 again, you may contact us via Live chat service or submit a request via web form.

To get the access to Live chat service or e-mail support one should go to this page, under Contact us click on the Start here button, select Have questions. From the pop up select Technical issue with product. Select FULL Version selection \Select product from drop down box.  Choose Live chat or Submit a request via web form.

Please do not hesitate to ask additional questions if the provided information is not clear or you need a further assistance.

Thank you.

I am having precisely the same problem. Has any solution been suggested?

Hi there,

My advice would be - go to a new product! Reading the forums when I had this problem, it is clear that the level of support from Acronis is very low. As you can see from the follow up, I did eventually get an offer of assistance from Acronis, but if you have no idea that it is going to come or not, then you can't rely on that. I never took them up on the 'offer' as my life is too valuable to waste time on Businesses who put their customer's satisfaction so far down the line. I am still using Acronis - just. I reverted back to my old version and this worked just fine. When I get a moment, I will read the forums, find a product which does the job and a vendor who does provide support. Having worked in IT for years, it never ceases to amaze me that software companies put out imperfect software, right troubleshooting sections in manuals that are so basic as to be useless (do they EVER update them with the results of calls they actually get? NO!), and then think customers should cover all their costs when they need to get help to use it. If their software and instructions were perfect, you would have no need for this. Do you know of ANY other sphere where we would have that?

Hi there (mayby some from Acronis read this forum sometimes ?, mayby not)

The first problem I found during installing Acronis Backup and Security on Win7 with Eset AV installed.
Phone technical service from Acronis was completly useless.
There is no option to install True Image 2010 alone. You must install with "best" in the class antivirus and firewall solution.
After reboot you will see only black desktop or Welcome on nice blue screen.
The only solution is uninstalling Eset, installing Acronis BS 2010, uninstalling Acronis Security leaving True Image 2010. After this, you can install Eset again.

But the more serve problem I found when I tryed to make a backup My Documents or any folder from HDD. There is 0x00640005 error code.
There is no solution or explanation of it, from over 6 months ?!!! (from the time Pete wrote first post).
I can make only email backup to disk. It's possible to make online backup of any folder, too.
But any other backup to HDD or USB HDD fail.
Some solution ?
