Can't install True Image 2014 - Windows 8.1x64

Thread needs solution

I'm running the latest update of Windows 8.1x64. Last year, I had trouble installing True Image 2013, as reported at forum.acronis.com/forum/42559, but I finally got it to install by installing in Safe Mode. Recently I began having problems with True Image 2013 not backing up and popping up error screens stating that it couldn't find version nnn. I discovered that Acronis was offering a free upgrade to True Image 2014 for Windows 8 and 8.1 users and decided to try it.

I encountered the very same problem trying to install True Image 2014 (full installer) that I encountered trying to install True Image 2013 with the same error codes. First, I received Warning 1909: Could not create Shortcut Try&Decide.Ink. etc. I clicked Retry and the installation process backtracked. Then I received a failure notice with Error Code 2902.

So I uninstalled True Image 2013 and tried to install True Image 2014 again, with the same result. Then I ran the Acronis Cleanup Utility (option 2) and tried again to install True Image 2014, with the same result.

Then I tried to install True Image 2014 in Safe Mode, which is the way that I was finally able to install True Image 2013. However, the screen for the Acronis Terms and Conditions overflows the monitor in all directions in Safe Mode, and I could find no way to check the box that I agree. So now I'm stuck with no True Image installed.

Could there must be something left from a prior installation that the Acronis Cleanup Utility didn’t remove? I’m surprised that I’ve had so much trouble installing True Image in Windows 8.1 when others seem to install it without any difficulty.

Just curious here, have you ever setup a user account on this machine?

Am posting a link that may help, look at reply number 2:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_inst…

I tried both suggested solutions from the above link, replies 1 and 2, and neither worked.

Using Troubleshoot Compatibility yielded the same Warning and Error codes as a regular install regardless of which prior Windows version I selected.

For reply 2, I tried to follow the directions, which aren't directly applicable here because the reply assumes that the shortcut mentioned in Warning 1909 is the name of an app. In fact, there is no Try&Decide.exe file in the Acronis directory that has been created by the time the Warning appears. When the Warning appeared, I copied the Acronis folder that had been created to the Desktop and rebooted. Then I copied the Acronis folder to the Program Files directory. Clicking on the various exe files did nothing, except I received an error message "True Image is not installed" when I clicked on TrueImageLauncher.exe.

You might try this:

Uninstall TI 2014 and run the cleanup utility.
Shutdown your PC.
You will now need to restart your PC and run System File Check utility. See link option 2 for how to.
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/3047-sfc-scannow-command-run-windo…
After SFC has run and all repairs made if any or if SFC scan was successful with no errors, Run Windows update and install all updates including any optional updates that may be applicable to your PC.
After update, shutdown your PC again and restart.
Now attempt reinstall of TI 2014.

When installing, right click on the 2014 installation file and use the
"Run as Administrator" option to do the install.

SFC/Scannow found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Unfortunately, the repairs had no effect on installing TI. I receive the same Warning and Error codes as before.

Did you run Windows update?

I believe that your installation attempts are failed because of one of the following issues:

Windows Update needs to install updates to the .NET framework.

You have a corrupted folder in which you are attempting to make the installation. This could indicate that the installation file you are using is corrupted or creates the installation folder as corrupted so install fails. Solution: redownload the install file from your Acronis Account and attempt to run and install the newly downloaded file.

The Program Files folder on your Windows installation is either locked or you do not have permission to install to that folder. Solution: View the Programs File folder in Windows Explorer, if you see what appears to be a lock on that folder then folder is locked. If you do not see this lock then you as a user may not have the correct permissions to write to the Program Files folder. Right click on the folder and choose Properties, click on Security tab, check for your user name in the list of permissions shown and that you have FULL control of the folder. If not, you can change the permissions or take ownership of the folder. Some times taking ownership of a folder is the only way around some issues.

Post back with results

No success.

1. Windows is up to date and has been at all times.

2. I re-downloaded the full install file to a different drive and ran it from there.

3. I took ownership of the Program Files (x86) folder and gave maximum allowable permissions to everything except Application Packages, which only have Read & Execute, List Folder Contents & Read. System, Me, Administrators, Users and TrustedInstaller have Full Control. I tried to give Creator Owner full control but got Special Permissions only, which shows that Full Control applies to Subfolders and files only. (This is a one user computer, despite all the Microsoft nonsense.)

Same Warning and Error messages.

Well at this point I am out of ideas. I do think that you have some conflict between Windows and the installer that ATI uses but I am not able to pinpoint it.

In the past, left over temp files have caused the TI installer to back out. Cleaning Acronis from your temp area is about all you have left to try. Open a command prompt and enter "cd %Temp%" without the quotes. That will tell you the temp folder that Windows is using. Use Windows Explorer to look inside all the folders in that area and delete all folders that refer to Acronis. That may help.

I deleted the contents of the temp directory which included an Acronis folder. It was under my app data. Then I ran the cleanup utility again, rebooted, and tried to install as administrator from the re-download of the full install file, but received the same Warning and Error popups.

JW99,
If you are still within the 30 days of receiving the 2014 serial, register the 2014 serial and try the LIVE CHAT support option.

Curious. As part of the "common" cleanup utility instruction, did you see the requirement to remove certain items from the Upper and Lower filters within the registry\?

I have an ongoing support request on this. I sent them the msi log file several days ago and am waiting to hear back.

I checked the Registry as instructed after running the cleanup utility and found nothing matching the items to remove.

Hopefully Support can be of some assistance to you.

Did you have any luck solving this problem? I have the same problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
