Can't prevent automatic Window Backup
Hi.
I'm running Acronis True Image Home 2011 on a Windows 7 (64bit) PC. I have Acronis scheduled to run a daily backup on Shut-down once a day to an internal HDD.
Twice recently I have left my PC unattended for about 1/2 an hour and, on returning, found it running very slowly because somehow a Windows Backup has started all by itself, indicated by the appearance of a change in the Action Center icon in the system tray (mouse-over indicated something like 'backup in progress').
The first time it happened I could only stop the backup by restarting Windows, where-after I un-installed, then re-installed True Image. That was a week ago. Now [significantly(?) Monday morning, again], perhaps on the first available occasion after a hidden(?) Windows Backup scheduled for 23:00 on Sunday, another backup began to run, until I re-started Windows once more.
If it helps, I've attached a screen grab of Windows Explorer showing the contents of my backup drive (E:).
Please let me know how to disable the Windows Backup, which doesn't seem to have been over-ridden by the Acronis TIH installation.
Many thanks,
Ian

Thanks for your reply, tuttle.
As far as I am aware, ATI is already integrated with Windows on my PC. Please see the attachment, which is a screen grab of my ATI home screen and the Backup and Restore window in Control Panel that shows ATI replacing Windows Backup as the program of choice.
A few weeks ago, I was using Windows Backup, rather than ATI, but it gobbled up space in my backup HDD too quickly, so I installed ATI instead. When I was using Windows Backup, I had it scheduled to run weekly at 23:00 on Sunday. I think that instruction may still be in control, even though I've installed Acronis, but now I don't know how to switch it off!

I'm guessing that you would cancel ATI integration with Windows, then disable the Windows Backup.

I went into Control Panel and enabled Windows Backup. This replaced ATI in the right hand panel with Windows Backup, which showed that it was not set up for scheduled backup (see screen grab). Now, I want to re-integrate ATI with Windows by disabling Windows Backup but there doesn't appear to be any way to do that either in Control Panel or in ATI's Tools & Utilities. All I can do is un-install and re-install ATI...

I found this by searching Internet. To disable Windows Backup:
1. Open the Control Panel.
2. Choose Back Up Your Computer (beneath the System and Security heading).
3. Click the Turn Off Schedule link, found on the left side of the window.
4. If you’re assaulted by a UAC warning, click the Continue button or type the administrator’s password.
5. Close the Backup Status and Configuration window.
To integrate ATI with Windows, I gave approximate instructions in my first post:
You can use the command (upper right corner of ATI screen, IIRC) to integrate ATI with Windows so as to replace Windows Backup functions.
Find that command and use it. I don't have ATI 2011, so I can't check specific location but it's there somewhere.

There isn't a 'Turn Off Schedule' link in that view of Control Panel, as can be seen from an earlier attachment. So that's a fail...

FYI, that command is under the 'Help' menu - I was looking under 'Tools & Utilities', where most normal users would expect it to be ;)
I didn't notice it there until after I had re-installed ATI again (for the third time now!).
Thanks for your help. I won't know if the schedule is still running until next Monday, I guess :(

I don't vouch for it. I found on the Internet. I have never enabled Windows Backup so I can't check it on my PC.

You should be able to check it now. I would assume that any scheduled backup requires an entry in Windows Task Scheduler. You might need to launch it as Administrator to view system entries.

I have sort of the opposite problem. I do NOT want it to schedule backups, not now not ever. I set Do not schedule button but after I create a second backup to a different sink the scheduled is suddenly set. NOT GOOS. How do I prevent UNWANTED schedules.
I have tried editing the settings aqnd click do not schedule but laster I see Daily schedule or weekly or one of the others set.
This is a huge waste of processing and space.
Windows 8.1 and Acronis 2015.
I have clicked make default after defining a backup but I am not sure what that really does.

Gilbertl,
Your problem sounds mostly that of being a new user.
The backups begin with a task and task is configured by you as to what is to be included within the backup (disk image, or partition images, or files and folder image); the backup files storage location; and the type of backup scheme (Full only; or full with incrmental; or full with differential;)
If you want another copy, you simply presss the "Back up now" option.
However, if you want to make a new backup with a change of what is included or where it is stored, etc,
you need a new backup scheme with the new settings. The new settings should incolude a different name and a different storge folder name.
Each task that you create will need to be individually configured for "do not schedule".
GH64. 71342: 2015 How to save a non-scheduled task.
Depending upon the type of backup scheme you wish to create, here is an example of each type. These can be set up for Disk image, or Partiton, or Files-folders backups. These example show how to set up automatic cleanup so the program will do the deletion after it reaches your set goal of how many chains to retain.
Editing an existing task is not recommended. Rarely does an edited task perform to user expectations. It is usually better to start with a new task using a new non-identical task name and point to a new storage sub-folder so each task has it own storage folder/sub-folder. Old task can be stopped or deleted from the task listings.

I thank you for the detailed pointers. However it really did not answer the question but I am ok now. The problem is that in some way the task was marked as Schedule., I edited it (I know that is not always the best but I did not want to start again, just add a differential to the current so could have just hit the backup now but the problem was it said schedule. IU edited the settings and took off the schedule and saved it. THe proej is that the open Acroinis window still said that the next backup was tomorrow at a time. It should not have said that. Even closing and opening and it still said that BUT the settings no longer showed schedule. This morning I checked and now the Acromis window shows correctly and another backup did not occur so I got what I wanted even though looking at the UI yesterday gave the impression that I would not.
All is ok now.
By the way I am FAR FAR FAR frolmn new. I may not post here much but have been using Acronis since 2009 or 2010 n. At least 2010 nfor sure since I still have the 2010 files.
Also, the UI should NOT allow you to make changes if they are not going to do what you try. If it allows editing it should edit as it shows and is should be more clear what save as really does. I love the way Acronis works as far as backing up but the UI has always been a bit confusing. THe 2015 version is MUCH MUCH better than easrlier versions.
AGAIN, do not consioder this as anything but a thanks for your effoert. I am sure may will benefit form the detailed listings.
There is one thing I amj not happy with and that is that it does not work well at all with Windows 10. You end up with three partitions and I have not been able to do a restore. I realize that this program goes deeply into windo0ws internals and may take some effort to get W10 version out but many other applications have been working fine and it would be nice if this one came out before W10 full release. I am happy thast owners of 2015 versions will not have to pay again like we did when W8 support cane out.

Gilbert.
I wish you hadn't hijacked my original post, which was resolved two years ago, because I'm getting an email notification every time you whine about not finding a solution. Judging by the errors in the text of your comments above, perhaps if you paid a little more attention to detail you might be able to solve your own problems...
