Can't restore image file

Thread needs solution

My computer has suddenly developed a problem where it frequently locks up without warning. I'm trying to restore my C: (boot) drive to an earlier configuration to see if that will fix the problem, using Acronis 2009.

(1) First I tried restoring from the Acronis 2009 boot disc. Acronis said all my image backups were "corrupted" even though they aren't. (In Windows, I can use the Acronis utility to mount the file as a drive and can see all the files in it.)

(2) Next I tried restoring from Acronis running Windows 7 in Safe mode to try to prevent lockups while working with Acronis. When I try to restore a file using Acronis, it says the Scheduler isn't running (true) but gives me the option to Ignore. Clicking Ignore brings me right back to the start. Why does the Scheduler need to be running to do a restore? I'm not trying to schedule anything.

(3) Finally I tried taking my chances and tried to restore the file with Windows in normal mode. I click "Recover" and am presented with a list of backups. I've moved the image file I want to restore to another location from where it was created, so I click "Browse for backup", find it, and click "Add to backup list." However when I click "Recover" again it hasn't been added.

How can I restore this image file?
