Can't System State restore from Removable Media???
I tried today to restore a (validated, differential, complete) system state archive having booted from the recovery disk. It said it couldn't restore this file type from "removable media" - which is a network drive from which I have previously successfully restored full backups.
Didn't get the same message when I initiated the process from Acronis as an app. running on the OS (Vista, SP3).
Why???
And does it mean I might have a problem doing a full restore in future if I needed to? (is there any way to check without actually initiating the restore, which of course I don't want to do!)
Thanks,
Julian

Hello Julian,
Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ | Acronis True Image]]
I understand the issue clearly and I can assist you with it. If you want to recover the entire system partition or the entire hard drive, you should create another type of backup.
Launch the program -> Operations -> Backup -> My computer.
The next window allows to backup either disks and partitions or the system state that comprises the boot files, registry, protected Windows files, and COM+ CLASS registration database. Backing up the System state allows you to restore the system files, drivers, etc., but not the data files and folders you use in your work. This type of backup file can be restored from within Windows only (this type of backup can be compared with the Windows Restore points).
To be able to restore the partitions and the data files and folders, select the Disks and partitions.
In order to perform a full disk backup to your, for example, external hard drive follow these steps:
- Launch Acronis True Image 11 Home;
- Click Backup and restore -> Backup -> My Computer -> Disks and partitions -> Choose the desired partitions for backup (partition C: is already marked);
- On Backup Archive Location window unfold My Computer folder and choose your external hard disk drive;
- In Folder line (at the bottom of Archive Location window) type backup name (e.g MyBackup) and click Next;
- Next Windows will show you three choices: 1) Create a new full backup, 2) Create an incremental backup, 3) Create a differential backup. Choose Create a new full backup -> Next -> Use default options -> Next -> Click proceed button.
You may later manually perform incremental backups of the hard disk drive to the external hard drive if you want to save all changes that have been made since the latest incremental or full image was created or perform differential backups if you want to save only last changes taken from a full backup creation.
Thank you.

Hello jess conrad,
Thank you for your post. I am terribly sorry for the inconvenience.
I will do my best to assist you with this, but could you please provide additional information regarding this issue. Can you provide a step-by-step description of your actions that led to the failure, we will then be able to help you.
As Oleg mentioned in his post, for additional security it is always better to create a partition backup as well.
You are always welcome to give Acronis True Image 2010 Home a try, it has a much improved functionality. Please check this article that shows to install the trial version.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Thank you.
