Can't use Windows Automated Installation Kit (AIK)

Thread needs solution

Below is the instructions for using AIK, needed to Creating WinPE Media with Acronis Plug-In
so I can transfer my system to a new computer.

I have been trying for two days and can't get one DVD to work, I have read all I can find on the internet, no help. I have tried using "FreeISOburner" still no luck.

The AIK file comes in as an .img file, yet Acronis suggests downloading in ISO format, how do you download an IMG file in ISO format?

Hope someone can help. I am using Windows XP Pro SP3, using Nero 6.6 OEM and FreeISO burner to create my DVD.

Thanks
God bless

Jim

Here is a link which many of us use which is a Win7 file but usable on xp as well.
As you see via the link, the download file is an iso file and is to be downloaded onto your computer as an iso file.

Once you have the iso file residing on your computer, then use a burn program (I use ImgBurn) and burn the iso file onto the DVD as an img file. Do not just copy the file onto the DVD. It must be burnt onto the DVD as an img file.

Should you have need to add special drivers to the file, you may want to consider creating a MustangPE Builder as per this information.

7. MustangPEBuilder by Mustang .   A. 17630: Free MustangPE & Free Plugins For True Image Home 2011-2013 & Disk Director 11 Home.    Mustang's Website     Build a WinPE 2.0 or 3.0 recovery CD with Acronis products and added drivers using the WAIK version; or build a WinPE 4.0 version using the ADK version. MustangPEBuilder is a major improvement in the ease of creating a WinPE based recovery CD for True Image Home. I use it and recommend its use.
MustangPEBuilder 2.0 is now provided for free and available in two versions. The first is for use with Microsoft's Automated Installation Kit (WAIK). The second is for use with Microsoft's Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK).

Additional Edit:
This file can also be downloaded on another computer--such as a Windows 7.
once the file has been downloaded and saved as an iso file,
(if Win7), you can RIGHT click on the iso file and
choose the "open with" option and then select
Windows Disk Image Burner which will burn the file as an image onto the DVD.

Additional Edit:
Once the WAIK DVD has been created, it becomes the installation disk for the WAIK installation.
Inserting the WAIK DVD should cause an automatic recognition of the DVD and the WAIk menu should appear.
If the WAIK installation menu does not appear, browse inside the root file of the CD and dbl click on the "StartCD.exe" file to force the menu to appear.

Tried all day and still haven't gotten anywhere, everything I do just requires me to look, read and downloacd more software that never works for me.

Very tired and discouraged with difficulty using the Acronis Universal Restore with Plus Pack

Thanks for your help

Jim,

Do you actually need to use the WinPE instead of the standard Linux with UR recovery CD?

Which version of WAIK did you download? The WAIKS are installable onto your PC. this might be why you are having a problem if you are trying to get True Image to make a WinPE CD and the WAIK isn't installed. I think True Image looks for the registry key pointing to where the WAIK is installed and then everything else is automated.

Does ImageISO allow you to look inside the img file? It might be possible to forget about burning to CD (WAIK) and install from the ISO into Windows, then True Image with Universal Restore installed can do the rest.

As you are using Windows XP, if you have an XP install CD to hand you can use the BartPE version instead, this comes with True Image.

Hi Colin,
I have tried the version that is offered as an .IMG file, tried it too many times, downloaded about 6 times, tried changing the extention from .IMG to .ISO, tried every way but it never burns as an ISO disc.

Today I tried Grover's suggestion, http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5753 , which is for Win7 and he says works with XP, I thought I had it made since I did get to make a bootable disc and did see windows starting (windows is loading files) then ''starting windows" then a black dos screen and eventually I came to the Acronis True Image part, I could see my two hard drives, but when I used the "Recover" feature with Disk and Partition Recovery that was it, I don't remember the name but it wasn't available when I opened Recover and choose "Disk and Partition Recover" I could see all my files on both attached sata drives which were both clones of the computer I was trying to replace. If you have any ideas please help, One thing I do remember when I was installing WinPe there was 3 stages, Installing Windows AIK, Core XML (MSXML) I believe 6.1, and Microsoft.Net 2.0 (windows 32 bit: NetFXx86 which I believe failed for some reason. I am going to try and re-install WinPE, I am now making a backup of one of the clones on the other to see if I can recover it.

To make it clear, here is how I am trying the transfer of one pc to the other,
1. Made a clone of the orginal PC
2. Attached two 1TB sata drives to the new PC (both have the same cloned data)
3. Boot from Acronis Rescu Media which has Win-Pe data
4. A screen with "(windows is loading files)" then ''starting windows" then the Acronis True Image 2013 window appears, under Recovery only two options appear, "Disk and Partition Recover" and Files,

Hope you can help.

God bless

OK, it sounds as though your Acronis WinPE CD is working correctly, it automatically starts True Image (there are other programs on it, but we'll leave those be for now).

We need to check we are both using the same terminology with the same meaning.

A clone = A complete copy of a disk to another disk, with no intermediary file or the ability to schedule a regular image of a drive. With a clone, only one of the drives should be internally attached on first reboot.

A disk image = A complete copy of the data on a disk contained in an intermediary file (in this case a tib file - similar in idea to a Zip file), this file needs to be kept on some kind of media. This file can also be scheduled to make updated images as either incremental or differential changes to your drive allowing you a choice of recovery at various timepoints depending upon how you have scheduled the imaging task(s).

The reason I've just stated this is because you can't recover a clone, so before we go any further we need to ensure we are referring to the same thing.

As I mentioned in the previous post, is there any reason why you wish to 'battle' :) with making a WinPe recovery media instead of the straight forward Linux default one?

Hi Colin,

Clone, made with Acronis clone disk, a complete exact copy of the disk in the computer made on a second disk that can be used by itself in the same computer when the original dies or is removed, in my case the clone was on a 1TB disk from a 500GB disk, the partitions on the clone were exactly like the original except larger in size. This was the first attempt, which failed to boot.
I could not find any way of using the clone with the WIAK disk. Later I made a full backup, A disk image = A complete copy of the data on a disk which resulted in an Acronis backup tib file, that loaded for over an hour and failed.

The method I am using is, using two 1TB drives, one with a clone the other empty, my idea was to use the WinPe recovery to move the contents of the cloned disk to the empty disk, this didn't work so I attempted to make a clone of the clone which finished I had two clones in the new computer, my thinking was the WinPe would recover from the one set as Primary disk, didn't work, I removed the partitions on this disk and made a full backup from the clone and tried to use this backup file with Acronis Recovery, this failed also.

One thing I have discovered during this is that one of my disks a 1TB Seagate is not picked up by the bios every time, It is a new disk but may be defective, I am going to order a new one today.

I want to thank you for your help, it will be a week or so before I get a new disk.

I am moving the old 500GB disk to a 1TB disk, so I assume I need a 1TB in the new computer and at least 500 GB backup or clone to transfer, I don't think I can clone or backup to a 1TB then install it in the new computer and use it. If this can be done please let me know.

Your question,
[As I mentioned in the previous post, is there any reason why you wish to 'battle' :) with making a WinPe recovery media instead of the straight forward Linux default one? ]

To answer your question above, I have read and searched so much to get to where I am and still don't know what to do, I am afraid to start all over again.

I'll be checking here later, Thanks,

God bless
Jim
