Clone Disk from a NAS Drive - Format New Drive?

Thread needs solution

I have a Buffalo NAS with a 500GB drive and I am going to upgrade it to a 2TB drive. My intention is to remove the 500gb drive and place it in a SATA docking station connected via USB to my desktop. I intend then to hook the new Seagate 2TB Nas HDD + SRS in my desktop so that both drives can be seen by my PC.

My question is should I create a logical partition in RAW format before I clone from the old NAS drive? Or can I do the cloning operation without doing this?
