Clone a ext4 HD is failed

Thread needs solution

Hello Communitiy

I try to clone a ext4 HD from my Synology NAS.

I use True Image 2013

Acronis works fine (to clone) with some other HD. I´ve tried this.

In the manual discripten is writen ext4 is supported.

So where ist the Problem.

Synology says Some Clusters on the ext4 HD are corrupt. Maybe this is the Problem ?

But Yesterday the HD works still 100%.

So what can I do ?

Please help.

Thanks a lot

Lea,

Even though the disk is working, if there are bad sectors or clusters, they can cause issues, or possibly be a sign of a failing disk too.

Cloning will fail if the disk has dirty/bad sectors on it.  I can't remember if 2013 has a an option to skip bad sectors, but if it does, you want to use that.

Or, better yet, run "chkdsk /f /r" on the drive before you attempt to clone so Windows can try to force repair the bad sectors or move the data off them and mark them bad so nothing gets written there again.

You can also check the disk with third party tools like WD Data Lifeguard (free), or the free version of Disksentinel.  You can try the pro version for 30 days as well and it both versions give you an estimate of the remaining life on the disk too.

There are quite a few posts about the bad sectors causing issues with cloning, here's a pretty thorough one for reference.

Thanks a lot for Information Bobo

I cannot use chkdsk because my usb HD with Synology exFAT format has no drive-letter

while waiting for the answer here I try clone CLONEZILLA Bios version. = abort at 85%

WD Lifedata found bad clusters but cannot repair = 8 Problems

HD Sentinel:

I try the Random Seek test, that was O.K. The Overview says EXZELLENT in Power and condition

Disk test found 12 bad Clusters baut says "no action needed" If i try the disk test =test failed in cause of write element (?!)

I see enclosed In line 197 there are the 12 bad clusters! No can I use the Offset unktion to count the "12" to  "0"

OH so many tools but no one of them can help my to clone my EXZELLENT HD  ;-(

Bobo you have some more Ideas ?

Thanks for your Ideas.

Lea,

With all of these other applications failing to backup/clone, I would be very cautious with your disk - it could be failing despite what any of the applications are saying.

At this point, you might want to try physcially cloning the drive with a hardware cloner - you can get one for less than $40 on Amazon. If that **edit**can't clone it, nothing will.  You might have luck with it though and for the cost, it's worth it.  Plus, you can use it as an external hard drive case/dock for up  to 2 drives for other everyday use as well.  The physcial cloning happens completely in the dock and does not need any access or attachment to a computer to do the clone process either - just make sure you put the SOURCE and DESTINATION drives in the correct slots!!!
