Clone function doesn't work

Thread needs solution

My first two attempts to use Acronis Clone function failed. I am running it on a Windows Vista machine and attempting to clone my C drive to a new Western Digital Passport 1-terabyte hard drive.

Step by step here's how it goes: I took all files off the Passport but could not move the folder that WD puts on the drive with their backup software and other utilities in it. I went ahead with Clone because I already knew it will erase content on the destination drive. A window comes up and asks me if it's OK to erase content and I answer OK, sure, go ahead, that's what I expect you to do. 8-) The next thing I hear from Acronis is that the system must be rebooted and I say OK to that too. The system reboots and nothing at all happens other than the reboot. Acronis does not load and the Passport drive appears to have not been touched - the WD folder is still in place. Launching Acronis at that point simply brings up the main interface window. No sign that it has any recollection that it is supposed to be processing the clone

Two immediate questions occur to me. Is it possible that WD has somehow set up the drive so the WD folder is protected and cannot be erased or moved, and that stops Acronis from doing its thing? If so, could this be solved by reformatting the drive?

But before I go through the lengthy reformatting of such a big drive to see if that solves things, I need to ask if I could have overlooked something I need to do? The Clone function seems simple and straightforward; I can't imagine what I could have done wrong but who knows.

In case it's relevant, I am running Norton 360. I don't like to disable security software, but if someone who knows what they're talking about tells me I must, I will.

Maybe Linux can't see the USB drive, when you reboot it goes into Linux to perform the clone. Make a Rescue CD (which is Linux), boot your system and see if it can see your WD drive, and if it can, try cloning from there.

Toni,
This WD is a USB drive, correct? How do you intend to use the clone afterwards?
