Clone the large disk on to the small disk

Thread needs solution

I'm using the Lenovo X61 and want to install 160G SDD instead of the current HDD, 300G.
So, I tried to run Disk clone and Acronis TrueImage Home 11 said that the destination DISK (160G SDD) is too small to clone the original disk even if I tried the manual mode.

Strangely, I already did it in my desktop with the same configuration. 160G SDD as target disk and 300G HDD as source disk.

So, I searched the several posts and have a couple of question.

1. If I use the backup option, back up the original disk to external HDD and install the SDD then restore the backup data into SDD it is bootable?
Please don't mention to use the Booting Disk of Acronis. My X61 has no optical driver.

2. What are the workaround?

Murgatroyd,

I followed the instructions in those articles. But, it didn't boot from the New SDD.

I think the MBR is not correctly restored. How Can I make it ?

Hello Chul,

Thank you for posting your question, I will be happy to help.

Please make sure that the size of the used space on your source hard drive is less than 160GB, otherwise, clone is impossible. Also please check the source hard drive for errors:

- Go to the Command Prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd)
- Enter the command: "chkdsk DISK: /r"
where DISK is the partition letter you need to check. Please note, that checking the C: drive may require you to reboot the machine.

The important point to remember is that you need to put the new drive in the laptop first, and connect the old one via USB. Only after this you may do the cloning. Otherwise you will not be able to boot from the new cloned drive.

Please see this  article  for more information.

And certainly, as a workaround you can perform the backup/restore operations.
