Clone Warning - "Destination disk cannot be used for booting the operating systems"
Looked around the forums a bit for a solution to this problem, but can’t seem to find one. Apologies if a solution already exists….
I recently purchased a PNY 480 GB SSD which I desire to replace my laptop HDD with.
Using Acronis True Image HD 2015 (Build 4061) and instructions for “Cloning Laptop Hard Disk” at https://kb.acronis.com/content/2931 I conducted the following.
1. Removed the source drive from the system and place in a USB enclosure
2. Installed the target drive into the system in place of the source drive. Connected the source drive externally via USB.
3. Booted from the Acronis Rescue media and performed the clone operation from the external drive to the internal drive using “automatic”
4. Although the clone appears to complete successfully, the following warning is given “The selected disk will be converted to a GPT layout, and will then be used as a non-system disk. Destination disk cannot be used for booting the operating systems”. Screenshot is attached.
5. After the cloning, I powered off, unplugged the “source” drive from the USB
6. My system will now not boot from the SSD.
7. I re-attempted the above, but formatted the SSD as GPT prior to the clone and received the warning “. Destination disk cannot be used for booting the operating systems”
Other items:
- Laptop is an ASUS K52J (circa 2010)
- I also checked that the sector sizes between the two disks match (512) and that both discs were “basic” (vice dynamic).
I think my problem is related to the “Destination disk cannot be used for booting the operating systems” but cannot figure out what to do next.
Any help here is much appreciated.
Matt

Thanks for the feedback. Interstingly I purchased the SSD yesterday and the manual directed my to http://MyMigrationSoftware.pny.com I suppose they host an old version. I will try and download directly from the acronis site.
Not certain what you mean by "unallocated" (not particulary savvy here...) but I do have the machine working with the old drive back in and will attemp to initialize and format. Of note, I did use the "add a new disk" from within the bootable media (using both MBR and GPT).

Ah, didn't realize this was a custom PNY offer. Sometimes the 3rd party versions of the ATIH software have certain limitations (like the new drive has to be the external one for the clone to work or vice versa). I can't find any information on PNY's offer other than the download link you provided.
I suspect this older version is the problem though so you may need to reach out to PNY to see if they have a newer one sine this is much older and may not have full functionality for the hardware in your new HP.
Just curious, but depending on what you paid for the PNY, if possible you could return and replace with a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB and use the Samsung Magiician clone utiltiy instead and may end up with a better and possibly cheaper drive in the process.
Or does the Acronis version that you received allow you to image/backup the existing drive? If so, you coudl save the image to another disk and restore the image to the new drive instead of cloning

Thanks for the info. Looks like the older version is the only one I can get my hands on, and the trial version of ATI doesn't allow cloning.
The version I received does appear to allow for imaging/backup. Is there a good guide for doing that?

Matt, please see the ATIH 2015 User Guide sections on Cloning that may help you here.
See also KB document: https://kb.acronis.com/content/2931 which has a video showing the process in action.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I was succesfully able to fix my issue by saving the image to another disk and restoring the image to the new drive instead of cloning as suggested by Bobbo_3C0X1
