Cloning, can't select SSD as destination

Thread needs solution

I have a new latop (HP dv7-4285dx) w/ x2 HDD bays. I'm waiting on a HDD hardware kit for the 2nd bay. The included HDD is a 640GB. I also bought a new 64GB Crucial SSD for this laptop.

Since I'm waiting on the hardware kit for HDD bay 2, I thought I'd go ahead and try the rescue set on the HDD. I had no idea, but that Cyberlink recovery software won't restore to a smaller drive.

I then booted with a 2011 True Image boot CD to clone the original drive to the SSD. The SSD is currently in bay #1 and the original drive is on a eSATA dock I have connected to the laptop via USB. What I don't understand right now is that at the "Select Destination Drive" section of the cloning utility, I have no option to select the SSD as the destination drive (it's listed - just not selectable). The HP HDD is 40GB fat right now but still 20GB below the size of the SSD. I tried reverting the SSD to unallocated space and that didn't help. I'm not understanding why I can't select the SSD as the clone destination.

Thanks.

Phil,

Maybe you have a driver issue with your SSD? Try to download the latest bootable media from your Acronis account, burn it to a CD.

Wrt to the approach, I would suggest your do a regular full disk image backup and restore to the SSD. Cloning is iffy.

If it were a missing driver, it would be invisible at all, not grayed. +1 for backup and restore method suggested.

Thanks. I ended up using the backup and restore method with my desktop and a eSATA dock. That worked perfectly. :)

Phil, use this tool to verify your SSD is aligned.
