Cloning Questions

Thread needs solution

Hi, I just recently activated my version of this cloning tool.  I was wondering if its possible with this program to NOT split my new hard drive into two seperate partitions?  I'd rather it be one whole.

TIA

Hello Kenneth,

Acronis is not just a cloning tool, it can do a lot more besides cloning.

The program will never split your new hard drive into two separate partitions.

When you clone an existing hard drive to a new one, then by definition, the cloned drive is identical to the original drive apart from being different hardware and perhaps some changes in size of any partitions present on the original drive.

Please see: KB document: 56634: Acronis True Image 2016: Cloning Disks - although is written for ATIH 2016 it is still very relevant for ATIH 2015 and also contains a video showing how cloning is performed.

There are some strong recommendations when it comes to cloning:

1.  Do this from the Acronis bootable recovery media and not from within Windows.  If you start to clone from in Windows it will still need to boot from an Acronis boot environment on your system and can cause problems which will prevent you from being able to boot normally into Windows afterwards!  Hence the strong recommendation to use boot media!

2.  Install the new hard drive in place of the original drive in your computer then attach the removed original drive to the system via USB or on a second drive connector if available.  Then clone from the original drive to the new drive.

3.  When the clone operation has finished, shutdown the computer and remove the original drive.  Do NOT try to boot with two identical (cloned) drives attached to the system as this will also cause problems because both drives will now have the same, identical drive signature!
