Cloning to a Smaller Disk

Thread needs solution

I have read this support article:
http://kb.acronis.com/content/17540

I still cannot clone to a smaller drive. I have a 500 gig c drive (with less than 40 gigs in use) that I am trying to clone to a 250 gig drive. Both drives say they are Basic but when I go to the Clone Drive app and select destination I cannot select the 250 gig drive as it is greyed out. I have formatted the 250 drive and created a partition on it. Not sure what to do next.

Which version of Windows and which version of TrueImageHome?

At this point, my approach would be.
1.Run chkdsk /r and Check source disk for disk errors.
2. Defrag the source disk.
3. Install the blank target disk inside the computer attached to same connectors as original source disk.
4. Attach source disk via some other method such as an external disk or via a usb adapter.
5. Boot from the TI Recovery CD
6. Use the Add new disk option and delete the partitions on the target disk so the space will be shown as unallocated when viewed in the cloning tool.
7. Use Manual method for clone and use the manual method as the move option.
...If you have multiple partitions, resize only the largest one(to smaller) and keep the smaller partition sizes the same on the target disk.
8. Afterwards, shutdown and reboot with only the new clone attached.
