COM Surrogate
I am trying to manage backup files on a flash drive and/or safely remove the drive from my machine, and I am being informed that I cannot accomplish these actions because "My folder is open in COM Surrogate". Does anyone know how to address this issue?

Try this, in Explorer go to Tools, Folder Options. Under the View tab, check the first box that says, Always show icons never thunbnails, also uncheck display icon on thumbnails, and apply.

Many thanks. My folder settings were already as you suggested.
Someone else recommended going to Task Manager - Processes. Then selecting dllhost.exe and End the Process. Does that make any sense to you?

Yes but I do not recommend that as doing so will create a security hole where unwanted active x control scripts can be run. Your best bet is to scour the process manager logs to see if you can determine the offending process. Most likely are Roxio and Nero apps.. The best resolution if these apps are found to be at cause is to make sure you have the latest versions and updates installed. This error has nothing to do with the TI app by the way, it is a Windows error.

Thanks, Bob, for your suggestions. I have checked my installed programs, and I don't have either Roxio or Nero applications.
Perhaps it will be of interest to know that this problem only occurs with a monthly backup to a flash drive. I also run a daily backup of the same files to a networked USB drive, and I have never experienced this condition with the daily backup.

This error is usually associated with thumbnail handling. If you can somehow manage to say edit the properties of the device and disable or remove any thumbnail dependency or reference you might solve the problem. These thumbnails that many apps use are generally supplied by third parties and are the most common source of this error.

Reboot does not work tried that. Also tried moving external hard drive where files were stored to another computer and when I tried to delete the files got the same error message. Then tried booting original computer in safe mode and still will not allow me to delete files.
This is how it started. I had new Window 8.1 up and running. Did not have enough room on the external hard drive I had been using so decided to delete some old now useless file. In the backup and recovery I was able to quickly delete old backups from list. I figured that I could close Acronis and later just delete the backup files in the explore mode. Shocked to see error message "This action can't be completed because the folder is open in COM Surrogate". When I reopened Acronis and tried to browse for the files to add them back I could not see them. How can I unlock the files and delete them for the space? Thanks in advance for any help
What needs to be done is to some how get the now open but invisible file back in the backup list. I am using True Image 2014
