Computer backup to smaller disk

Thread needs solution

Howdy,

I would like to create a disk image (Computer backup) using ATHI 2009. My C: drive is 2TB but has only 350GB of space used. The target backup drive has 1.0 TB of space left. I have a couple of questions about this.

1. The first operation of the backup is to create a partition on the backup drive. Does the backup drive need space for a partition as big as the C: drive (2 TB)? Or does the target drive only need to be big enough to hold the 350GB of data?

2. I am changing the RAID configuration on the source computer from striped to mirrored. Will the restore of the disk image work correctly with this change? With the amount of data smaller than the mirrored drive, it seems like it should work. But again, I don't know what will happen when ATHI tries to restore from the the backed up partition to a drive with a changed RAID configuration.

I appreciate whatever ideas you have.

Thanks,
Tsquared

1. You can restore an image to a smaller disk as long as the data backed up fit on that smaller disk. Check out Grover's guides here: http://forum.acronis.com/forum/29618

2.
- If you are using a software RAID (ie set up in Windows), you are out of luck: ATI doesn't support software RAID 1.
- If you are using a hardware RAID, you need to make sure that the recovery CD can see your RAID disks as a single volume. If the recovery CD sees 2 separate disks, you will not be able to recover your system.
- Normally, changing the type of RAID with the same RAID controller should not create an issue for restoring the image.
