Thank-you very much MudCrab. That was the clearest explanation of a fix I've seen. I was comfortable creating & changing the IRPStackSize value from your post. At first it didn't seem to work (I restarted the laptop each time) so I kept increasing the value (now at 45). Then I restarted both the desktop and the laptop machines & voila - it works!
Now I have a follow up question: Is there any reason not to leave the IRPStackSize value at 45? Should I start trying to lower it again for some reason?
I really appreciate your help & advice on this.

Dave,
If you lower the value, the problem will most likely come back. However, there shouldn't be any harm in trying it.

It is perfectly fine to leave the IRPStackSize value at what you now have it set to.

Great! Thanks very much GoneToPlaid. Obviously I don't understand exactly what the implications of this setting value.

No worries. Increasing the value of IRQStackSize to what you did consumes just a very small amount of additional memory. But obviously you need the larger value in order to account for all of the software installed on your computer which performs low level I/O operations, regardless of whether those operations are for the hard disks or even for USB devices such as memory sticks or external USB drives. According to Microsoft, the value you set still is way below the maximum recommended limit.
