Consolidating Backup message

I am using the 2014 version and doing differential backups. After the latest backup I get the message that it is consolidating the backup. This consolidation runs for hours. If I cancel it, it says the backup has failed. I tried again and the consolidation has now been running for 6 hours. What should I do?
