Consolidation. What does it actualy do?

Thread needs solution

I don't quite understand what what consolidation will do. I did a test where I selected a full backup and all of the incremental backups to consolidate. I resulted to the same number of files (full + increments), and each file was about the size of the files that I had selected for consolidation. Another test that I did was to select only the last incremental backup. It resulted to a new file which was about size (a bit less) than the full backup. I assume (!) that this new file contains all the information to restore the system to a situation when the last backup was made right? But what about my first test (where I selected the full and all incremental backups?

Please see the following KB documents dealing with consolidation:

KB 46725: Acronis Software: Troubleshooting Consolidation Failures

KB 48620: Acronis True Image 2015: Consolidation Is Not Supported

KB 17815: Acronis True Image Home 2011: Consolidation

As indicated above, consolidation was dropped in ATI 2015 and all later versions as better cleanup features were introduced to help users manage the size of their backup data.
