Copying errors?
I have backed up a partition from a SSD, and then restored it onto a HDD.
The problem is that some of the s/w on the HDD no longer works properly.
Does this mean the HDD is faulty, or does TIH write to known bad sectors on the HDD?

Same drive letter - it's the boot partition.
Boots up OK, but one or two programs do not run.

Did you replace the SSD with the standard drive? Which programs are you having problems with? Can you run a repair install of those programs? They could be looking for the disk signature that could be different now that you are using a new boot partition.

The HDD is a 2TB, the SSD 60GB
Right now, I just used the tools to add a HDD. So I had a formatted 2TB drive.
I then tried to clone the SSD on both manual and automatic and got a message "Clone Disk operation failed".
Where do I go from here?

Are you trying to do the clone while in Windows? If you are cloning the SSD to the HDD, you should boot to your Acronis 2012 Rescue Media, and perform the clone while booted to it. Be careful to select the correct drives as the source and destination or you could clone a blank drive to your SSD.

While booted to the Rescue/Recovery disc, Is it possible for you to perform a full disk based backup of your SSD to an external drive or a spare drive and then do a restore to your standard hard drive as opposed to trying to do a clone? Does your SSD still work properly by itself in your system?

I have already tried backing up the SSD to NAS and then trying to restore to HDD.
Nothing works.
The SSD still performs perfectly.
I will check out the HDD in more detail in a few hours.

The software that doesn't work, does it use a licence key?
The SSD drive will have a different serial number and that is enough to stop some 'keyed' licenced software from running.

Well, I can certainly copy it onto a similar size SSD from another manufacturer without problems.
Is there any good (free) HDD checking s/w around? I tried the Acronis but all that did was read the SMART data.

Dirk,
It would be helpful if you could give some idea of what the software that has stopped working actually does. I take it other software works OK?

Several pieces of s/w seem to have been affected.
However, the most obvious one is ZoomPlayer, which will not now play DVDs (or ripped uncompressed DVDs). Other problems are more subtle.

Clone Disk fails - all options, even though I can write to the HDD using windows 7.
Is there a problem with Samsung 2TB discs?

Pulled another Samsung 2TB HDD from another bit of equipment.
Installed it using "Add Disk". Run Acronis 2012 from boot disc.
Tried the clone operation, automatic, from the SSD - "Clone Disk operation failed"

Finally found the problem - a PCIe extender that was too long.
For some obscure reason it interfered with data transfers to (and possibly from) the HDD, but without creating any obvious sign.
The machine would still run, but odd bits in odd places would be flipped. No BSOD, just an occasional glitch.

Thanks for the update.

What surprised me was that acronis did not seem to actually check what was written to the HDD. I think some kind of optional check between source and target would be useful.
